WILLIAMSBURG -- There is something about the Raider Invitational that brings out the best in the Williamsburg girls’ swimming team.
Twice last year Coach Mindy Wuebker’s troops won the Raider Invitational, and they triumphed again Sept. 11 in their first home invitational of this season, outscoring their closest challenger, Grinnell, by 100 points, 411-311.
“A great meet,” said coach Wuebker. “The girls fought hard and got a well-deserved win.”
Williamsburg recorded 21 season-best swims and used their team depth to their advantage, coming away with three place winners in nine of the 11 races.
The Raiders’ lone champion was the 200 freestyle relay team of Emily McGovern, Gwen Yearian, Caitlyn Cronbaugh and Laura Carrico. They set a season best in 1:52.64.
Carrico also finished second in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races, posting season-best times of :27.39 and 1:01,16; Yearian, Cronbaugh and Kya Dobesh were runners-up, respectively, in the 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle; and Carrico, Yearian, Dobesh and Selah Smith placed second in the 400 freestyle relay in a season-best 4:16.52.
