COGGON — Learning about your team as the season goes and getting better along the way are simple goals any team hopes to achieve.
Saturday’s North Linn Lynx Invitational was another step in that process for the Belle Plaine boys wrestling team.
The Plainsmen wrestled eight of their guys in the varsity portion of the tournament.
“We got some good competition in today,” Belle Plaine coach Brandon Heying said.
”We moved some guys around to meet that competition and not run from it. I think we are gathering some good data to learn from and use to help us improve at this point.“
Two guys that moved down a weight for Saturday were the Sankot twins.
Will Sankot, 10-2 at 150 to start the season moved down to 144 and wrestled Class 1A No. 6 Bryce Carroll from Cascade in the final.
After winning his first two matches by fall, Will battled in the final in a low scoring match. Carroll was able to get a first period takedown for the lone points of the match and a 3-0 win.
Wade Sankot came into Saturday 14-1 and wrestled down at 150, facing North Linn’s Westyn Price in the semifinals, ranked eighth in 1A.
The match delivered from start to finish.
After a takedown and two near-fall points, Price jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Wade got two reversal points at the end of the first period.
That would not be the last time Wade Sankot was aggressive on bottom either.
In the second period, Wade Sankot not only got a reversal, but four near-fall points and nearly a pin. Price was able to hold on for the 10-9 victory in the third.
Wade Sankot won by fall in his next match for a third-place finish.
The Plainsmen’s other finalist was freshman Brody Hosek at 113. Hosek has had a nice start to his freshman campaign and cruised to the finals with two wins by fall.
Hosek also got experienced against a ranked wrestler, falling to 1A No. 10 Dakota Aney of Columbus/WMU for a runner-up finish.
Hosek was one of four underclassmen who competed for the Plainsmen.
“We are still a relatively young team [and] gather valuable experience as we go,” Heying said. “I also think we have not peaked yet, which is the way we want it.”
Derek Kressley finished fourth for the Plainsmen at 190, and Ivan Hamilton did the same at 165.
Kressley picked up an 8-1 decision in his first match and battled Columbus/WMU’s Kason Dopler, ranked ninth at 175, to the very end in the semifinals.
Kressley was aggressive during the entire third period, getting a stalling call on Dopler, but Dopler held on for the 5-3 decision.
Gaining experience early in the season against top-ranked wrestlers can prove valuable come postseason.
As a team, Belle Plaine finished seventh with 103.5 team points. Aidan Timm, returning state medalist, did not wrestle due to injury precautions.
“I think a lot of good lessons can come from today if we’re willing to learn from them,” Heying said.
