COLFAX — Iowa Valley’s Skyler Hoyt and Raelene Hawkins qualified for the state meet next week with runner-up finishes at the Class 1A girls’ wrestling regional Friday at Colfax-Mingo.
Hoyt fell in the semifinals to the eventual 130-pound champion but got a second-period fall over BGM’s Cheyleigh Blankenship in the second-place wrestleback.
“We thought Skyler had a good chance bumping up a weight class, and she had one of her best performances,” Iowa Valley coach Lucas Krakow said.
Hawkins, the one-seed at 170, was pinned by APGC’s Kira Cox in the semifinals.
“We came out a little slow in that match, but she (Hawkins) turned things around quickly after,” Krakow said.
The Tigers’ junior made it to the wrestleback, winning by tech fall over Vinton-Shellsburg’s Sadie Burke.
Both now advance to the State meet for the second-straight year.
Kodie Holcomb finished third at 135 for the Tigers and was defeated in the wrestleback for second.
BGM just missed qualifying three wrestlers. Amiah Lint (110), Shyla VanNevel (120) and Blankenship (130) finished third in their weight classes.
All three fell in the wrestleback for second.
English Valleys’ highest finisher was Anna Gorsh at 120, who placed fourth.
