NORTH ENGLISH — The HLV-TC baseball team returned many of the same faces from last season and is much improved.
The Warriors, after an 18-0 win over English Valleys Friday, moved to 3-3 on the season, already passing last season’s win total of two.
“I think the atmosphere is different,” junior Keegan Gorsh said. “We’ve been playing well together, and we got better bats than last year. Everybody is doing their part.”
The bats are definitely better. Last year the team totaled 48 RBIs. The Warriers have 38 already through six games this season.
“The drills we’ve been doing in practice has really done everyone good for the season,” Gorsh said of the improved hitting.
Friday’s game was a dominating win start to finish. The Warriors ended this one after five innings, driving in 12 of their 18 runs with seven hits.
Cael Weisskopf, Peyton Roth and Landyn Ankrum all had RBIs in the first to get things started.
The Warriors scored two in the second, four in the third, five in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Six players knocked in runs, four of those with multiple RBIs.
Gorsh and Landyn Ankrum had three RBIs apiece, and each hit a double in the game.
Bryer Jack allowed one hit on the mound and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third with a strikeout and a ground-out.
English Valleys’ lone hit in the game came in the fifth inning off a grounder between third base and shortstop from Cael Grove.
Grove made a nice double play in the first inning defensively, catching a line drive and throwing out the runner on third.
The Warriors will try to keep the wins coming and exceed their 2023 season win total of five.
Gorsh thinks the Warriors can continue to improve with pitching and infield practice. Gorsh is one of five pitchers the team has put on the mound this season.
