MARENGO — Eric Loren Oberthaler, 40, of Kalamazoo, Michigan was charged Feb. 25 in Iowa County District Court with driving while his license is denied, suspended, canceled or revoked. He was stopped by Williamsburg police Feb. 25 at 2:27 a.m.
Oberthaler was held as a fugitive awaiting extradition to Michigan on a charge of drug possession, second offense.
Oberthaler was charged in Michigan with possessing fentanyl. He was previously convicted in Michigan in September 2013 of possession of analogues, according to court documents.
On Feb. 26, the court dismissed the fugitive charge because Michigan’s warrant was for neighboring states only, and Michigan declined to extradite Oberthaler from Iowa.
Brandon Taylor Kopp, 21, of Belle Plaine, was charged Feb. 24 with driving while his license is denied, suspended canceled or revoked. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Department picked up Kopp at 9:39 p.m. Feb. 22 at IA 220 east, 220th Trail and U.S. 151 north, court documents say.
Michael Edward Skipper, 67, of Georgetown, South Carolina, was charged Feb. 22 with possession of marijuana first offense, operating a motor vehicle under the influence, first offense.
Skipper was stopped by the Iowa State Patrol on I-80 exit ramp 225 at Williamsburg Feb. 22 at 5:19 p.m.
According to the State Patrol, Skipper was operating a commercial vehicle with no company name on the side of the truck and was not wearing a seat belt.
State Patrol smelled marijuana and found a blue glass pipe with burned residue between the driver’s and passenger seat, court documents say. The officer also found a container of leafy, green substance with a label that said it contained THC.
Skipper was also charged with hours of service violation, operation by an unqualified driver, failure to use a seat belt, not having a valid driver’s license, operating without evidence of authority, failure to comply with the orders of a peace officers and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Douglas Patrick Stull, 61, of Marengo, was charged Feb. 23 with assault. According to court documents, Stull reported about 9:46 p.m. Feb. 22 that he was in a physical altercation with his roommate, Dean Floyd Weis, and had pushed him and hit him with his fist.
Stull pleaded not guilty. A bench trial is set for April 1.
Jennifer Brooke Van Hyfte, 45, of Ladora, was charged Feb. 25 with theft in the fifth degree. Van Hyfte is accused by Marengo police of writing a bad check for just over $496 at Marengo Farm and Home, 365 Western Ave. Nov. 5, 2024 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Mormily Gilmete, 39, of Cedar Rapids, was charged Feb. 19 with driving while his license is denied or revoked.
The Iowa County Sheriff’s Department picked up Gilmete about 3:34 p.m. Feb. 18 at 110th St. and U.S. 151 north. Gilmete’s license has been revoked from Feb. 7 through Aug. 5, 2025 for failing an OWI test, court documents say.
Gilmete was also charged with speeding and with failure to provide proof of financial liability.
Zachary Daniel Freese, 29, of Brooklyn, was charged with driving while his license is denied or revoked.
Court documents say that an Iowa County deputy found Freese parked on the eastbound shoulder in the 3700 block of 220th Trail in Amana about 3:51 p.m. Feb. 19. According to court documents, Freese said he was having mechanical problems.
Nacir Niem Beamon, 18, of Milwaukee, was charged Feb. 23 with possession of marijuana, first offense. According to the Iowa County Sheriff’s Department, Beaman was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by a deputy at 255th St. and M Avenue about 11:20 p.m. Feb. 22.
Officers found marijuana in the vehicle.
Another passenger in the vehicle, Quadrevier Keveontae Harris Bland, 18, of Wisconsin, was also charged Feb. 23 with possession of marijuana, first offense.
