MARENGO — Lindsey Leeann Smith, 44, of Independence, Missouri, was charged July 18 in Iowa County District Court with two controlled substance violations, one a Class C felony and the second a Class D felony, with failure to affix a drug stamp, also a Class D felony, with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, first offense and with possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, first offense.
The Iowa County Sheriff’s Department stopped Smith July 18 at 2:14 a.m. at mile marker 215 in the eastbound lane of Interstate 80 after clocking her at 78 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone, according to the criminal complaint filed with the court.
Smith said she was traveling from Missouri to Davenport, according to the deputy’s report.
The deputy smelled marijuana in the Ford Econoline van, and the passenger, John Keith Wright, 43, of Kansas City, Missouri, handed the deputy a small jar of marijuana, about 10.86 grams of it, according t the report.
The deputy searched the vehicle and found 21 pounds of marijuana in 20 plastic bags in the open cargo area of the van, court documents say. The deputy also found a glass pipe that tested positive for meth, a bag of psilocybin mushrooms weighing 94.6 grams and about 53 grams of marijuana wax, the report filed with the court says.
The deputy also found a marijuana sorting tray and a semi-automatic 40 caliber CZ P-09.
An ashtray was overflowing with burned ends of marijuana cigarettes, and Smith failed field sobriety tests, according to the deputy. Smith refused to provide urine for testing, the deputy reported.
Smith was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. She pleaded not guilty, and the court set a non-jury trial for Dec. 16 at 9:30 a.m.
Wright was charged with two controlled substance violations, one a Class C felony and the other a Class D felony, with failure to affix a drug stamp and with being ineligible to carry dangerous weapons.
Wright was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded not guilty and is set to stand trial before a judge at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 16.
Richard Clyde Brown, 67, of Amana, was charged July 21 with domestic abuse assault, third or subsequent offense, a Class D felony. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Department alleges that Brown “shoulder checked” his wife, Denise Ann Brown, and threw a beverage over her back about 3:21 p.m. July 19 at 503 F St. in Amana.
Richard Brown has three prior convictions for domestic abuse assault, according to the report filed by the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office. A no contact order was issued July 20.
Brian Paul Callanan, 58, of Oxford, was charged July 16 for driving while his license is denied, suspended, canceled or revoked. Williamsburg Police arrested Callanan July 11 about 8:54 p.m. on P Avenue, according to court documents.
Adan Quintero-Santos, 18, of North Liberty, was charged July 17 with failure to stop in an assured clear distance about 9:40 a.m. July 16 at 220th Trail and 38th Street.
Jerry Horne, Jr., 42, of Des Moines, was charged July 17 with driving while his license is denied, suspended, canceled or revoked. The Iowa State Patrol stopped Horne at a rest area at mile marker 208 on Interstate 80 about 1:40 p.m. July 16.
Horne was also cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability.
Zane Allen Pope, 20, of Conroy, was charged with a turning at an intersection violation. The violation occurred Oct. 19, 2024 at 5:39 p.m. at West Miller Street and Western Avenue, according to a report filed by the Iowa State Patrol.
Tylor Dean Hudson, 30, of Marengo, was charged July 21 with driving while his license is denied, suspended, canceled or revoke. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Department stopped Hudson about 8:41 p.m. July 17 on U.S. 151.
The Iowa County Assistant Attorney filed a motion to dismiss a charge of domestic abuse assault, first offense, against Emily Rose Costello, 30, of Marengo and the subsequent no contact order at the request of the victim Sean Anthony Costello.
Karen Rae Mochal, 73, of Williamsburg, was charged July 22 with theft in the fifth degree. According to a report filed with the court by the Marengo Police Department, Mochal used the self checkout at Dollar General, 2161 Highway 6 Trail in Marengo about 6:26 p.m. July 16 and failed to scan or pay for 28 items totaling $155.80.
Brendon Edward Howze, 27, of Waterloo, was charged July 21 with possession of a controlled substance, marijuana. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Department stopped Howze on M Avenue about 3:05 p.m. July 18 for driving 55 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone and for having a taillight out, according to the criminal complaint filed with the court.
The deputy smelled marijuana, and Howze admitted to having about two grams, the complaint says.
A search of the vehicle produced about 4.8 grams of bud marijuana, according to the court document.
A charge of control of a firearm by a felon, a Class D felony, against Cole Allen Wells, 22, of Indianola, was dismissed. Wells pleaded guilty to assault while displaying a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced to serve two days in the county jail and received credit for two days served.
Wells was fined $855.
Wells was charged March 24 after allegedly pointing a firearm at Anna Birkenholtz, of Pella, while westbound on Interstate 80 in Iowa County about 6:27 p.m. March 23.
Prosecutors asked the court dismiss a charge of assault against Jacob Thomas Fabor, 28, of Grinnell. Fabor had been accused of assaulting Dakota John Kruse at 2208 G Ave., Marengo about 5:20 p.m. June 8.
