MARENGO — Robert L. Plumlee II, 30, of Benton, Illinois, was charged July 31 in Iowa County District Court with operating a vehicle without the owners consent and with burglary of a motor vehicle.
According to a report filed by the Iowa County Sheriff’s Department, a witness saw Plumlee driving a 2012 Dodge Ram with Illinois plates and then parking in the Millersburg City Park. The witness thought his behavior was suspicious, the report says, and called the law enforcement.
A deputy visited with Plumlee who said he was driving to Las Vegas, the report filed with the court says. Plumlee claimed that the truck belonged to a family member who was at a downtown café.
The report says that after the deputy left Plumlee, a man flagged down the deputy and said the driver of the Dodge had burglarized his vehicle in Williamsburg. Surveillance camera footage showed Plumlee driving north out of Millersburg, the court document says.
About 45 minutes later, Plumlee called the sheriff’s office and said that he was at the Casey’s in Victor and that his debit card had been stolen, the criminal complaint filed with the court says.
A deputy arrived in Victor and placed Plumlee under arrest for vehicle burglary. The deputy found paperwork in the truck identifying the owner of the Dodge, according to the report filed with the court.
The owner said he didn’t know the Dodge was missing from his residence, that he doesn’t know Plumlee and that Plumlee did not have permission to drive the truck, the court document says.
Plumlee was charged with theft in the fifth degree for the incident in Williamsburg.
Williamsburg police said in a criminal complaint that Plumlee parked behind a Honda Civic on the west side of Casey’s at 130 W. Evans Street in Williamsburg about 4:30 July 30. Joshua Doty, of Marengo had just exited the Civic, gotten into another car and left the parking lot, the complaint says.
Doty left a Motorola G Play 64GB in a duffel bag in the car, the criminal complaint filed with the court says. Plumlee got in the drivers’ side door and took the duffel and its contents, which included toiletries, valued at about $200.
The property was found in the truck at Casey’s in Victor, according to court documents.
Plumlee pleaded not guilty to theft. A non-jury trial was set for 9:30 a.m. Dec. 2.
Ahjanae Lashae Byrd, 18, of Ottumwa, was charged Aug. 4 with driving while her license is denied, suspended, canceled or revoked. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Department stopped Bryd about 8:14 a.m. Aug. 4 on Iowa Highway 149.
Chase Edward Harriman, 18, of Ladora, was charged Aug. 4 with driving while his license is denied, suspended, canceled or revoked. The Iowa State Patrol stopped him at 11 p.m. Aug. 1 at mile marker 213 on Interstate 80.
Carlos Daniel Diaz, 27, of Williamsburg, was charged Aug. 1 with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, first offense. A Williamsburg police officer was patrolling North Highland near Interstate 80 about 10:50 July 31 and noticed a brake light out on the SUV Diaz was driving, according to the criminal complaint filed with the court.
The officer turned to follow it and stopped the vehicle because of numerous driving infractions, such as driving in the middle of two lanes, turning left on a red light and stopping while a light was still green.
During the stop, the officer noticed the smell of alcohol in the vehicle and that the driver had bloodshot watery eyes, the report says.
The passenger said both he and the driver had had six beers. Diaz had a blood-alcohol level of 0.163, according to Williamsburg police.
The charge was dismissed Aug. 4 because the defendant was taken into custody by Immigration Customs Enforcement.
