MARENGO — It was a tight battle from all three boys’ teams in a South Iowa Cedar League golf triangular Monday, but only one team could come out on top.
That team was Iowa Valley, which edged Lynnville-Sully by two strokes, and defended its home course at Marengo Golf Club in windy conditions.
The Tigers shot 211 on the nine-hole par 36. Lynnville-Sully finished at 213, and Belle Plaine was close behind with 217.
The Tigers had three finishers in the top five, led by Owen Bral’s 47. Tyson Kriegel shot a 50, and Samuel Ahrens, a 51.
Bral carded a birdie on the par-four fourth, listed at 264 yards. Ahrens posted a birdie on hole three.
“Owen had a pretty good night,” Iowa Valley coach Martin Wieck said. “The rest are showing improvement too. I look forward to working with them to improve and try to peak at the right time.“
The Plainsmen were led by a third-place finish from Cooper Hoey, with a score of 48. Derek Kressley was sixth with a 51.
On the girls’ side, Lynnville-Sully edged the Tigers by two strokes, 230-232.
The Tigers did have two of the top three finishers. Medalist Emma McCaw shot a 52, while her teammate Alivia Rabe shot a 55.
McCaw birdied the par-four third hole for the lone birdie of the day on the girls’ side.
“Emma and Alivia both had very good results,” said Wieck. “I was pleased with the improvement all of the girls made.”
Belle Plaine had one golfer in action on the girls’ side in freshman Alli Hoover, who shot a 73.
“It was a good effort on a windy night,” Belle Plaine coach Andy Dahlquist said on the team. “More experience and some lower scores for us tonight. Lot of work to do but improvement is coming.”
