MARENGO — Eight-player football No. 4 Iowa Valley outscored its opponents by 328 points this season.
That’s an average of 41 points per game, with the Tigers pulling the foot off the pedal in the second half of many of those games.
Friday’s regular season finale was much of the same, as the Tigers cruised to a 60-20 win over WACO. The team will head into postseason play with an unblemished 8-0 record.
“It feels great,” Chance Hoyt said. “We put in a lot of work and pushed ourselves in practice. We have a great group, and we always stick together.”
Iowa Valley’s first play of scrimmage lost four yards, but it was pretty much all positive after that, as Nolan Kriegel ended the opening drive with a 54-yard touchdown pass to Josh Read.
After a Mason Hoyt interception, Chance Hoyt ran it in from a yard out to give the Tigers a 20-0 lead after a quarter.
Kriegel ran for another in the second, which was followed by a 20-yard TD run from Layne Peska on the following offensive possession.
Peska, who played QB for two drives, rushed for a score and threw a 40-yard TD pass to Dane Smith.
The Tigers shared the wealth in this game, giving each of their playmakers some touches.
“It’s great being able to rely on multiple guys,” Chance Hoyt said. “We have many guys that can step up in big moments.”
WACO had its best offensive drive against the Tigers’ starters in the second, with three first downs through the air.
That came to a stop quickly. After resetting the chains and crossing midfield, the next four plays were a tackle for loss, sack, tackle for loss and another tackle for loss by Chance Hoyt on fourth down.
The Warriors did not get any closer to scoring against the starting unit. The Tigers led 53-0 after three quarters.
The running clock was on the entire second half.
The Tigers passed for 180 yards and rushed for another 247, averaging 9.1 yards per carry. Kriegel led the way with 150 yards.
Defensively the Tigers had 10 tackles for loss. Chance Hoyt led the way with 3 1/2.
Sitting at 8-0, Iowa Valley now sets it sights on much bigger goals this postseason, eyeing a trip to the UNI Dome. The Tigers advanced to the second round of the playoffs last season and look to take that next step this time around.
“We just got to keep our minds right, stay positive, minimize errors and not let small ones become big ones,” Chance Hoyt said.
