MONTEZUMA — After one quarter, Montezuma led Iowa Valley 8-7.
What happened after that?
An offensive explosion.
Iowa Valley, ranked No. 4 in 8-player football by the Cedar Rapids Gazette, defeated No. 7 Montezuma Friday in a crazy, high-scoring affair, 83-64.
Yes, that is correct. 147 total points.
“Both offenses figured things out,” Iowa Valley coach Casey Krull said after the first quarter. “We were both making big plays and we both struggled to adjust.”
The offensive numbers were impressive on both sides in this top-10 matchup.
Montezuma’s Brady Boulton threw for 278 yards and six touchdowns.
“He was throwing it all over the place, and he is really accurate,” Krull said.
Broox Stockamn had 307 all-purpose yards offensively and scored four touchdowns.
Iowa Valley’s Nolan Kriegel totaled 10 touchdowns, with nine coming on the ground. On 36 carries, Kriegel rushed for 353 yards. As a team, the Tigers totaled 511.
A 29-point third quarter helped the Tigers pull away.
Although stops were minimal, five forced turnovers played a part in the Tigers win.
“We’ll learn from this defensively,” Krull said.
Iowa Valley moved to 4-0 and has two top-10 wins on their resume. They’ll finish up district play the rest of the regular season.
“It’s huge,” Krull said on the challenging schedule. “We’ve learned a lot about ourselves and have been through a lot of adversity and injuries.
“Guys have been able to step up and now we know we can rely on them.”
The Tigers will host HLV-TC (1-2) Friday. Montezuma (2-1) welcomes Moravia (2-1).
Winfield-Mt. Union 28, English Valleys 26
NORTH ENGLISH — A tight 8-player District 5 battle throughout, Winfield-Mt. Union scored against English Valleys with less than a minute left in the game to take the lead.
Cody Milks ran it in from 16-yards out.
English Valleys had taken the lead earlier in the fourth on a six-yard touchdown catch from Colton Mikesell. The score was set up by a 40-yard run from Drew Fisher.
English Valleys (2-1) will be back in action against Belle Plaine (0-3) at home Friday.
WACO 48, HLV-TC 7
WAYLAND — In a battle of the Warriors in 8-player District 5, WACO was all over HLV-TC.
WACO (3-0) led 40-0 at halftime, and scored 48 unanswered, before HLV-TC scored its lone touchdown in the fourth.
Madrid 53, BGM 27
BROOKLYN — In its toughest test so far this season, Madrid’s rushing attack proved to be too much for BGM.
The Tigers ran for 470 yards on the ground, led by Loken Velky’s 230 yards and four touchdowns. Madrid led 20-7 at half.
Beau Burns threw for 151 yards and rushed for all four scores for BGM, adding another 128 yards on the ground.
Landon Hassett had 10 catches for 142 yards.
BGM (2-1) will be at Lynnville-Sully (2-1) Friday.
