DES MOINES — From not placing at state last season, to a runner-up finish this year, Iowa Valley’s Lydia Kriegel kept a vow to herself to improve in the shot put.
Kriegel tied her best personal best throw of 40 feet, four inches to finish second in the Class 1A girls’ shot put Thursday at the State Track and Field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The throw came on Kriegel’s third attempt.
“It’s crazy to think that I started throwing shot put as a sophomore and how much I’ve grown and gotten better,” Kriegel said. “It’s all thanks to my coach for putting so much time into helping me. I’m so happy with how I performed.”
Kriegel will carry some momentum into defending her discus crown today as the reigning champion from last season.
One other area event placed in the 1A afternoon session of event finals Thursday. HLV-TC’s 4x800-meter relay quartet, Aaliyah Cooper, Caiya Schmidt, Ayla Hall and Emery Hall, broke 10 minutes for the first time.
Their 9:55.42 was good enough for seventh place. It’s the first state medal for Schmidt and the Hall sisters.
English Valleys’ Ava Gehrking ran two personal bests and qualified for both the 100 and 200 finals. HLV-TC’s Ema Roberts qualified for the finals in the 200.
Montezuma’s Chloe Snook placed 14th in both the 100 and 200.
Belle Plaine was 12th in the shuttle hurdle relay preliminaries.
