BROOKLYN — One home run wasn’t enough for Lydia Kriegel and the Iowa Valley Tigers in a non-conference matchup against Nevada Saturday.
Coming off three straight losses this week, Iowa Valley bounced back Saturday with two wins.
Kriegel, coming off an individual discus title at the State track meet, has had a strong start to her junior campaign.
On the first at bat of the game, Kriegel had a triple on a hit to right center field.
“Lydia did a nice job leading off for us. This was her first-time batting leadoff for us,” Iowa Valley head coach Monica Miller said.
She was hit in on a successful bunt by Ella Reid.
A sac fly and wild pitch later, it was 3-0 Tigers after one.
Kriegel also pitched all five innings in this game.
In the second inning, the home run fireworks began.
Kriegel launched a two-run shot over the center field fence. Nevada added two in the bottom of the inning off the bat of Nicole Wittrig.
Kennedy Rathjen and Kriegel both hit HRs in the third bringing in a total of five runs. Both were hit over the center field area fence.
“Kennedy has been working really hard for us,” Miller added.
“Izzy (Kriegel) has been hitting well for us too.”
For the fourth home run of the game, Nevada’s Meagan McGaffin hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams brought in one run in the fourth off RBIs from Iowa Valley’s Skyler Hoyt and Nevada’s Kylie Taylor.
The game ended after five, and the Tigers won 12-5.
The Tigers also dueled against SICL foe BGM in their second game of the day at the BGM invite. The Tigers came out on top, 7-4.
Iowa Valley was 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play after Saturday.
BGM was 5-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
“It’s been a good start to the season, we’re very young with only five juniors and seniors.” Miller said.
“Mistakes will happen, we just need to keep rallying and playing hard.”
Iowa Valley will face off against Montezuma Monday and HLV Wednesday. Both will be key in conference standings.
