BROOKLYN — If the name Nolan Kriegel wasn’t well-known in 8-player football in the State of Iowa, let it be known now.
The sophomore tallied a total of 10 touchdowns (eight rushing, two passing) for Iowa Valley as the Tigers defeated BGM in a high scoring affair, 76-67, Friday night.
“It was easy when I have this group around me,” said Kriegel after his performance. ”The line did phenomenal tonight.”
With Kriegel’s production on the field, it would have been easy for him to start thinking about his stats mid-game.
“I try not to think about stats,” said Kriegel. “I don’t want to think about that in the game.”
Kriegel, as quarterback, understands his importance as a leader, even as a sophomore.
“I’m young, but I know my job is to control the team,” said Kriegel. “I’m not much of a talker, but more by my actions on the field.”
The opposing quarterback, Beau Burns, put up nine touchdowns of his own with five through the air and four on the ground.
Burns led the whole state last season in total touchdowns.
History repeated itself in this matchup, and the scoring nearly matched the 155 total points scored in last year’s playoff game.
BGM fumbled on the first play of the game and gave the Tigers the ball. Kriegel ran the next play in for six.
A big return from Tate Martin set up an 11-yard run from Burns and tied it up 8-8 after the successful two-point conversion.
The back-and-forth scoring continued throughout the rest of the first quarter with a combined 53 total points scored between the two teams.
The Bears cut the score to 38-29 in the second quarter with a 27-yard touchdown catch from Dakota Heishman.
The Tigers finished the half strong and that proved to be pivotal in the game’s final.
Kriegel added a 59-yard touchdown run and a one-yard touchdown run set up by a 53 yard pass to Owen Bral to make the score 54-29 at half.
The Bears kept fighting in the second half.
After a defensive stop, the Bears scored quickly on a 38-yard touchdown run from Burns.
The Tigers drove down the field again, and Kriegel ran the ball in from a yard out to make the score 62-36.
Burns threw two more passing touchdowns to Tucker Wright and Martin, and Kriegel threw his second to Caleb Haack from 12 yards to make the score 70-49.
Kriegel’s 10th and final touchdown came from eight yards out and made the score 76-55 in the fourth quarter.
Kriegel finished the game with a total 305 rushing yards and 121 passing yards to go with his 10 total touchdowns.
Burns had 251 yards through the air and 230 more on the ground.
Another rushing touchdown from Burns and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Martin made the final 76-67.
“Overall it was a great team win. They’re a great football team,” Iowa Valley head football coach Casey Krull said of BGM.
The Bears made it tough on the Tigers after building a nice lead and made them fight until the end, Krull said.
“We need these tough games, and we need to be ready every week.”
“This win gave our guys confidence,” said Krull.
