MARENGO — Each year on June 14, Flag Day is observed in Marengo by the Wandling-Wendel American Legion Post 76 with the burning of torn and tattered flags.
Throughout the year the legion receives old flags from area residents and stores them until Flag Day when, in a brief ceremony, they are disposed of properly.
Old flags can be left in a drop box outside the main door of the Legion Hall at any time.
In the brief Flag Day ceremony, members of the American Legion Post 76 comment on the importance of the proper disposal of the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, offer a gun salute, and observe the playing of taps.
Veterans tend the burning in barrels placed for the ceremony by the Legion Post.
The annual event takes place just north of the Legion Hall at the north end of Court Avenue, and the public is invited to attend.
