WILLIAMSBURG — Lutheran Interparish School’s annual run may need to alter its route this year due to construction.
The Williamsburg City Council approved the route for the April 5 5k and 1k races at the request of Brooke Uhlmann, who said the route would be the same as in the past.
“Brooke and I have already discussed this over email,” said Williamsburg Police Chief Justin Parsons during the March 10 Williamsburg City Council meeting.
The police department recently created a form for organizations hosting events which will help police better plan what they need to do to keep people safe during the event.
Lutheran Interparish has done a good job communicating with police, Parsons said.
Melissa Clow, who attended the meeting for HR Green for a different agenda item, said road construction on Elm Street in front Lutheran Interparish School might be underway by April. Clow said HR Green would have a construction timeline March 11.
In its motion to approve the race route, the city council approved any alternate route that Lutheran Interparish and Parsons agree on to avoid construction. Councilman Tyler Marshall was absent.
Other events
The council also approved street closures for two events for Williamsburg First Responders.
Evan Welsh told the council that the first responders are planning a street dance Aug. 2 outside Sundown Bar and Grill and will need to close the 100 block of West State Street to the alley by the 1890 Lofts and into the intersection of Court Street and West State Street from about 3-11 p.m.
“I don’t think we’re going to need all that [time],” said Welsh, but he wants to make sure first responders have enough time to set up and clean up.
Welsh said he’d discussed the street dance with Williamsburg City Manager Aaron Sandersfeld and with Parsons. He’s still working with Tonya Grimm at Sundown on dance details.
The dance will raise money for the first responders for a new vehicle, said Welsh.
The city council also approved a street closure for the 200 block of West State Street and the 500 block of Elm Street from 3-8:30 p.m. Aug. 5 for the annual National Night Out, an event that showcases emergency personnel in a carnival atmosphere.
