Maas is new office assistant at the Kirkwood

Williamsburg’s Kim Maas is the new office assistant for Kirkwood Community College in Iowa County. Following is a Q&A featured in Kirkwood’s spring newsletter.
What are your previous background and experiences in education?
My most rewarding position in education was at Williamsburg/Mary Welsh Elementary School here in Williamsburg. I was the elementary school secretary for 21 years. I thoroughly enjoyed the daily chaos of all the students and teachers that came through my office doors. I enjoyed getting to know families and giving back to the students that are in the community that I live in.
Who has made the most lasting impact on you in your own experience?
As most people, I’ve had many people that have impacted my personal life. However, there is one person that stands out in the education field: Dave Widmer, Mary Welsh Elementary Principal (retired). I was so fortunate to be able to work with him every day. He probably is the most patient and kind person that I’ve ever met. He made sure every student that came through the school doors felt valued and cared for. The Maya Angelou quote says it best: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
What are you most passionate about in your role at Kirkwood?
Since I am usually the first person that people see when they come through our center doors, I want to make sure I provide a positive, friendly, welcoming vibe. I want to make sure all students have a positive, safe experience here at the Iowa County Center.
How do you feel taking college credit courses while in high school better prepares students for their futures?
Taking college credit courses in high school is such an advantage. Taking these courses saves money, time, and gives students a sneak peek as to what college will be like.
Anything else you would like people to know about you?
My husband and I live on a small farm just west of Williamsburg. Between the two of us, we have two daughters, and two sons (grown and flown), and eight grandchildren. We love country life and have cows, goats, two Labradors, and a few farm cats. And maybe someday soon a donkey or two. In our free time, we enjoy spending time with family, riding ATV trails in our SxS, and cheering on the Hawkeyes.
