Marengo American Legion: Embracing progress for the community
By Morris Denson, Commander, Post 76
Apr. 11, 2023 4:18 pm
History was made on March 25, 2023, at our new Post 76 groundbreaking. Our national anthem was sung, a prayer given, the weather cooperated and the crowd enthusiastic and appreciative. What a wonderful day!
Two years ago, our 92-year-old hall was sold to Compass Memorial Healthcare to assist them in their need for room to grow.
In 1951, members of Post 76, perhaps your grandfather, father, uncle or brothers fresh from years of war, knew the importance of good accessible immediate healthcare. Post 76 became the sponsoring organization to bring such a hospital to Marengo. Marengo Memorial Hospital was a memorial to the Veterans of World War I, World War II and Korea.
The present Legion members are proud to be a part of that mission that began 72 years ago. We embrace progress for our community.
Since 1932, our present location has been used for service, community and memories. Every important life event has been held within those wood paneled walls. Yes, it will be hard to say goodbye but time marches on and so will Post 76.
Our new hall will be 8,800 square feet. It will be modern and handicapped accessible, with a drive-up window for carryouts and ample concrete parking area. Our view to the east will be inspiring, looking at the flag display at Gateway Park and the Iowa County Freedom Rock. The hall will be available to rent at very reasonable rates for receptions, reunions, celebrations of life and all important life events.
Our fundraising continues, with $900,000 raised of our projected $1,200,000 cost. We are proud to say that 85 percent of the money already raised has come from the Legion, its members and other Veterans, not one penny will be borrowed. With your help by the end of summer our hall will be complete, ready to go and trouble free for many years to come.
Your donations will guarantee no disruptions in construction. We appreciate all donations and $500 or more will put your name on the donor wall. A great way to honor a past or current veteran is by supporting the organization whose mission is to support them.
If you wish to be part of the next chapter for Post 76, send your check to Post 76, 1240 Lafayette Ave., P.O. Box 232, Marengo, Iowa 52301. Any questions, call me at (319) 642-3426.
Thank you in advance. With your help memories and service to our community will continue for generations to come. I encourage everyone to watch our new hall grow.
(Leaders through Iowa County have been asked to share updates and outlooks for their organizations as they relate to the communities they serve in this weekly column. Our hope is to provide a forum for towns to share progress and success from different viewpoints. We are still in the process of scheduling columnists and will continue reaching out to connect with school, municipal, economic, tourism, youth and other community leaders. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Melinda Wichmann, editor, Hometown Current, at (319) 654-4740 or email Melinda.Wichmann@Southeastiowaunion.com.)
