WILLIAMSBURG — There is a reason the Marion boys soccer team went to state last year in Class 3A, and that was on full-display in the second half against Williamsburg Tuesday night.
“They got many guys that can create stuff and move well off the ball,” Williamsburg coach Ryan Sauser said. “They have a lot of finishers too.”
The Wolves scored all four of their goals in the second half, handing the Raiders their first loss of the season, 4-1.
Williamsburg held control in the first half and got off to an early lead.
Gunnar Van Hyfte used a header off a free kick from teammate Mason Eggleston to score at the 34:16 mark in the first half.
“I thought we came out well,” said Sauser.
Marion controlled the flow of the rest of the half, but the Raiders’ defense held firm, not allowing a goal. Goalkeeper Elias Schanz had 10 saves at the intermission.
Marion kept the offensive pressure going in the second half, using its speed and great ball movement, and finally scored at the 34:39 mark on a goal from Patrick Flanagan.
The game intensity and physicality picked up in the second half, resulting in a few yellow cards.
The Raiders were not able to flip the field much, and Marion broke through for three more goals in the final 17 minutes.
Each of the four goals for the Wolves were scored by different players.
“We allowed them to push behind and play in our gaps,” Sauser said. A team like that, in the midfield you can’t have guys go unaccounted for.
“It’s a good learning experience and they’re a good team.”
The Raiders are now 4-1-1.
Having Mason Eggleston back from injury to pair with Braysen Doehrmann has provided a nice offensive duo for the Raiders in the early going.
“It's definitely been a shift. This is a different style we’ve played to a degree,” said Sauser. “Just because with Mason and Braysen, they are hard to deal with when we get them looks.“
The Raiders also have some younger players stepping into roles, including goalkeeper, Schanz, who has been splitting duties with Logan Hummer this season.
Both goalkeepers provided different looks and skill sets in front of the net for the Raiders.
Coach Sauser believes things will keep improving.
