Montezuma off to 5-0 start in conference play
Resurgent English Valleys off to 5-2 start

Every area boys basketball team has played six to nine games so far this season.
Montezuma, off to a 5-0 start in conference play, appears to be the cream of the crop among area teams thus far this season.
Here’s a quick look at each area team so far this season.
SOUTH IOWA CEDAR LEAGUE
Montezuma (6-1, 5-0)
As on the girls side, the race appears to be between Montezuma and Lynnville-Sully. Sigourney also remains a potential contender.
Montezuma will have a key stretch to start the new year, playing Sigourney and Lynnville-Sully in back-to-back games.
Brady Boulton is fourth in Class 1A with 26 points per game, and also leads the area in assists (38) and steals (28).
The Braves’ offense is averaging 69.4 points per game. Dane Strong (15.6) and Talen Holland (12.6) are averaging double figures.
English Valleys (5-2, 4-2)
Resurgent English Valleys has proven itself to be an upper half team in the conference this season.
The Bears lead the conference in three-pointers with 57, a key part of the team’s start so far this season. Five players have made eight or more.
Everett Bender leads scoring with 18.3 points per game. Christian Tripses is next with 13.5, and the team’s post presence, Kane Axmear, is at nine a contest.
English Valleys has already topped its win total from last season.
Iowa Valley (2-5, 2-4)
Iowa Valley feels confident it can put together more wins in the new year.
Cole Long leads the Tigers with 18.3 points per game and is fresh off a 36-point performance.
Zavier Pederson is at 10 points a game and leads the team in assists with 28. Owen Ary is the leading rebounder with 54.
BGM (2-5, 2-4)
BGM heads into the new year on a two-game winning streak.
The Bears are on pace to top last season’s win total of five.
Beau Burns leads the way with 16 points a game. Maddox Rhoads leads the team in threes with 15, adding 10.7 per game.
Ben Cadden is the team’s leading post presence.
HLV-TC (3-5, 1-5)
The Warriors have a trio of scorers so far this season.
Tucker Donaldson averages 13.9, Sean McCulloch 12.6 and Lance Milton is at 8.1.
Aiden Van Waus leads the team in rebounds with 50.
Belle Plaine (0-9, 0-6)
The Plainsmen are still searching for their first win of the season.
Mason Walter has been the highlight this far, leading the team in points and steals (27). Walter is averaging 12.7 points per game.
Peyton Dostal is second on the team with 8.3 points per game.
WAMAC WEST
Williamsburg (1-5, 0-5)
The Raiders’ lone win this season came in a non-conference matchup against Fort Madison.
Through five games, Griffin Becker leads the team in scoring with 14.2 per game as the Raiders’ starting post player.
Dylan Weisskopf also averages double figures with 11.4 per contest.
