Montezuma wins Belle Plaine Invitational

BELLE PLAINE — Montezuma won the overall title at the Belle Plaine Boys’ Invitational Thursday, March 28.

The Braves scored 157 points. They were followed by Grundy Center with 141, English Valleys with 139 and Iowa Valley with 130.

Belle Plaine finished seventh, scoring 73, and HLV was 13th with 33.

Montezuma won gold in eight events in Class B competition.

Kenny Chiswell won the 100, Garrett Watts won the 110 hurdles and high jump, and Luke Brennan won the 400 hurdles.

The Braves also won the 4 x 100, 4 x 200, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relay.

Also in Class B, Sam DeMeulenaere won the 400 and 800 for Belle Plaine. The Plainsmen also won the 4 x 400.

Deshone Anderson won the 200 and long jump and Gage Heyne won the 1,600 and 3,200 for English Valleys. The Bears also won the 4 x 800.

In Class A action, Caleb Haack won the 200 and the high jump for Iowa Valley. The Tigers also won the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 and sprint medley.

The cold, rainy weather canceled a few early outdoor meets. The March 25, boys’ meet at Pekin, and March 26 boys’ meet at Vinton-Shellsburg, plus the Belle Plaine girls’ invitational were all canceled.
