Mount Vernon man wins triathlon

MARENGO — Drake Austin, of Mount Vernon, was first across the finish line in the Gateway Triathlon Sept. 16, and Kim Sprenger, in the 60-64 age division, was the first woman to finish.

Austin, running in the 30-34 age group, finished in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 27.31 seconds; Sprenger, of Iowa City, finished 14th overall, in 1:23:57.07.

The Triathlon began with a foggy 500-meter swim in the lake at Gateway Park in Marengo. A 16-mile bike ride took athletes through rural Iowa County, and a 5k run showcased scenic Gateway Park and Preserve.

Matthew Behnke, of Ames, finished second overall in 1:15:27.01. Third across the finish line was Mitchell Knock, of Fairfax, in 1:15:28.68.

Area athletes

Dominic Fisher, of Williamsburg, finished second among guys 19 and younger with a time of 1:35:30.52. James Duncan, of South Amana, finished seventh in the same division in 2:13:31.01.

Peter Georgakakos, of Williamsburg, finished fourth in the 35-39 age group in 1:26:04.16. Jordan Sauser, of Williamsburg, was seventh in 1:37:06.59.

Todd Sauerbrei, Marengo, was second in the 50-54 age group. He finished in 1:41:53.62.

Team JMK, of Williamsburg, finished first in team competition — different team members taking each leg of the race — in 1:29:54.13
