VICTOR — There will be a new coach at the helm for the HLV-TC girls’ basketball team this season.
His is a familiar face to many Warriors’ fans and Victor natives.
Nick Blomme is an HLV graduate. He was a member of the Warriors’ state tournament team in 2003.
Blomme had been living in Cedar Rapids and was an assistant boys’ coach at Lisbon before moving back to Victor in 2022.
“Our move back to small town Iowa has been wonderful, and I am so excited to be back on the sidelines after two years away,” Blomme said.
The Warriors went 11-10 overall last season and 8-7 in a very tough South Iowa Cedar League West division, which had three ranked teams — Montezuma, Lynnville-Sully and North Mahaska.
The team made it to the regional semifinals before falling to Coon Rapids-Bayard.
One all-conference player, Ayla Hall, returns for the Warriors this season.
Hall, a first-team selection, averaged 12 points a game and a staggering 5.8 steals per game last season for the Warriors.
Hall’s steal total of 123 led the conference and was seventh in all of Class 1A.
“Although we only have one returning all-conference player, we have a returning nucleus that we are excited about,” Blomme said.
“The team, as a whole, made a nice improvement from the prior year, and we have a solid number of girls from both HLV and Tri-County.
“The combination of HLV-TC has been perfect for both schools, and our student athletes have made it a great experience,” Blomme said.
Practice begins Monday statewide for girls’ basketball, and the Warriors open up their season Dec. 2 at English Valleys.
