Department finalizes tax brackets
DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Revenue has finalized individual income tax brackets for the 2024 tax year (applicable for taxes due in 2025) and the 2024 interest rate, which the agency charges for overdue payments.
Iowa law provides for the indexation of individual income tax brackets each year by applying inflation factors to the previous year’s levels.
Under current law, Iowa will phase down over the next two years to a single tax rate for all taxpayers; there will be two brackets in 2025 with a top rate of 4.82% and a single flat rate of 3.9% for all levels of income effective with tax year 2026.
According to the Iowa Department of Revenue, married taxpayers filing jointly with a taxable income less than $12,420 will pay no tax. People married and filing jointly with a taxable income of $12,420 to $62,00 will pay 4.82%, and couples with taxable income over $2,941 will pay 5.70%
Taxpayers other than married taxpayers filing jointly will pay nothing if they have taxable income less than $6,210; 4.82% if their taxable income is between $6,210 and $31,050; and 5.70% if their taxable income is more than $31,050.
Starting Jan. 1, the interest rate for overdue tax payments will be 10% annually.
