FFA members compete in market swine
DES MOINES — Two hundred and ninety-five FFA exhibitors from across the state of Iowa competed in the FFA Market Swine show at the Iowa State Fair.
Tanner Curtin, with Williamsburg FFA, showed the Division 1 reserve champion in crossbred market barrows.
Grinnell FFA’s Megan Mauss had the Chester white market reserve champion in purebred market swine. Mia Brect, with Williamsburg FFA showed the Landrace market champion, and Kaeley Axmear, with English Valleys FFA, had the Tamworth market reserve champion.
Williamsburg FFA finished second as a team out of 135 FFA chapters. Grinnell FFA finished 10th.
Sewers awarded at the Iowa State Fair
DES MOINES — Jane Bazyn, of Victor, took first place at the Iowa State Fair for machine embroidery applique quilt.
Bazyn also placed for a hand-stitched quilt.
Homestead resident shows grand champion guernsey
DES MOINES — Abbie Gahring, of Homestead, earned Grand Champion Female in the Guernsey Dairy Cattle show judged Aug. 8 at the Iowa State Fair.
Gahring also had the first-place spring yearling heifer and the first-place junior three-year-old cow.
Gahring finished first and third in junior champion female and reserve. She finished first in intermediate champion female and reserve.
Chad Sickles, of Marengo, placed third in the fall heifer calf category and won the fall yearling heifer category and finished second in the senior two-year-old cow category.
Sickles took second place in the premier breeder category.
Beginning needleworkers compete at state fair
DES MOINES — Exhibitors between the ages of 11 and 18 received awards in the Iowa State Fair Fabric and Threads Junior Division.
Harper Van Ersvelde, of Grinnell, received an honorable mention for her crochet item.
Abigail McKenna, of Vinton, placed second in the pieced quilt division.
Senior exhibitors sew for awards
DES MOINES — The Senior Citizen Division created a variety of pieces for the Fabric and Threads Competition at the Iowa State Fair this month.
Charlene Doehrmann, of Williamsburg, took second for a hand-embroidered item.
Barb Orr, of Brooklyn, received an honorable mention for her counted cross stitch item.
Top woodworkers win State Fair honors
DES MOINES — Woodworkers were awarded top honors in the Wood Projects competition at the Iowa State Fair.
Tom Garwood, of Vinton, won second place for his shore bird decoy. He also took first place and best of show for his wildlife carving.
Marengo man places in Jersey show
DES MOINES — Chad Sickles, of Marengo, took third in with his spring yearling heifer as dairy farms competed for top honors in the Jersey Dairy Cattle show Aug. 8 at the Iowa State Fair.
Abby Gahring, of Homestead, took 10th place for her fall heifer calf.
Breeders win brown Swiss awards
DES MOINES — Dairy farms competed for top honors in the Brown Swiss Dairy Cattle show at the Iowa State Fair.
Brilynn Schanbacher, of Newhall, took second in winter heifer calf, and Abbie Gahring, of Homestead, took second with her summer yearling heifer and was third in junior champion female and reserve.
Homestead exhibitor champion in Ayrshire
DES MOINES — Abbie Gahring, of Homestead, won grand champion female in the Ayrshire Dairy Cattle show judge Aug. 9 at the Iowa State Fair.
Gahring was sixth in winter heifer calf and fourth in fall heifer calf. Gahring was first in summer yearling heifer and second and third in spring yearling heifer.
Gahring showed the third-place winter yearling heifer and finished first in junior two-year-old cow. Gahring had the junior champion female and reserve and the intermediate champion female and reserve.
Dane Lang, of Brooklyn, finished eighth and ninth in the spring heifer calf category.
Chad Sickles, of Marengo, had the first-place senior two-year-old cow, and Gahring had the second-place cow.
Sickles showed the first-place five-year-old cow and third in intermediate champion female and reserve. Sickles was second in senior champion female and reserve.
Holstein show produces local winners
DES MOINES — Tim Rauen, of Blairstown, earned second-place and sixth-place in spring heifer calf as top dairies competed for honors in the Holstein Dairy Cattle show at the Iowa State Fair.
Abbie Gahring, of Homestead took 10th place. Chad Sickles, of Marengo, placed 17th and 18th.
Gahring finished 11th and 18th in fall heifer calf, and first in summer yearling heifer.
Brilynn Schanbacher, of Newhall, placed third in summer yearling heifer.
Sickles finished sixth in spring yearling heifer.
Gahring was second in winter yearling heifer, and Schanbacher was fourth. Tim Rauen, of Blairstown, placed fifth, and Sickles was eighth.
Sickles showed the fifth-place summer junior two-year-old cow and the fifth- and sixth-place junior three-year-old cow.
Gahring place fourth and fifth in senior two-year-old cow.
Milking shorthorns impress judges
DES MOINES — Midwest dairies faced off in the Milking Shorthorn Dairy Cattle show judged at the Iowa State Fair.
Abbie Gahring, of Homestead, finished first with her winter heifer calf and placed third with her spring yearling heifer. Gahring took second in fall yearling heifer not in milk and first in junior three-year-old cow.
Gahring finished second in junior champion female and reserve and third in intermediate champion. Gahring finished third in grand champion female and reserve.
Gahring also placed second in the supreme champion cow category.
Marengo’s Chad Sickles finished fourth in dairy herdsman awards.
Montezuma woman graduates in Marshalltown
MARSHALLTOWN — Katie Elizabeth Pollock, of Montezuma, received a degree in practical nursing from Marshalltown Community College.
Marshalltown Community College is a member of the Iowa Valley Community College District comprised of Marshalltown Community College, Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Valley Grinnell and Iowa Valley Continuing Education.
