Judges look over prospect cattle
DES MOINES — Paul DeJong, of Montezuma, showed the fifth-place Angus heifer In the State Fair Prospect Cattle Show Aug. 10.
DeJong also placed fifth in the market heifer category, and he showed the fifth-place crossbred steer.
Dogs take honors at Iowa State Fair
DES MOINES — A Golden Retriever shown by Shelley Button of Van Meter, claimed Best in Show during the Dog Show at the Iowa State Fair.
Taylor Boland, of Williamsburg, finished fourth in Rally Novice.
Belle Plaine man wins arm wrestling competition
DES MOINES — Parrish Miller, of Belle Plaine, competed in the State Fair arm wrestling tournament.
Miller finished first in the right-hand bantam weight division.
Fruits win fair honors
DES MOINES — The top growers claimed awards in the Fruit Crops contest at the Iowa State Fair in August.
Betsy Cranston, of Deep River, took first in single plate of winter apples, and Charles Hoehnle, of Homestead, took third place.
Hoehnle took first place for his peaches and third place for green pears. His green gage plums placed first and second, and his wild plums took third place.
Hoehnle also took first place for other variety of plum, and Barbara Hoehnle took second place.
In the small fruits category, Charles Hoehnle took second place with his gooseberries and second place with his aronia berries.
