Judges award jellies
DES MOINES — Shelly Schmit, of Williamsburg, won several ribbons for jelly during the Iowa State Fair in August.
Schmit received third place for her pepper jelly and second place for her plum jelly.
Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and adherence to food safety rules.
Gingerich Percheron wins honors
DES MOINES — Gingerich Percheron, of Kalona, won Best of Iowa — Percheron at the Iowa State Fair last month.
Gingerich Percheron also had the first-place produce of dam and the second-place get of sire. Gingerich took first-place in senior stallion foal and third in stallion yearling. Gingerich also won with its two-year-old Percheron.
Gingerich’s yearling mare finished sixth in judging, and its two-year-old mare finished fourth.
Homestead horse second in horse show
DES MOINES — A homestead woman placed in the Iowa State Fair Belgian and Shire Horse Show last month.
Diana Ramsey, of Homestead took second place in herdsmanship, five or fewer stalls.
Marengo woman wins horse awards
DES MOINES — A Marengo woman won several awards in the English Society Horse Shows at the Iowa State Fair in August.
Judith Gauger took first place in the five-gaited amateur category and second place in five-gaited stake.
Gauger was first in fine harness Iowa-owned, fine harness open and fine harness stake.
Gauger finished second in Morgan gelding at halter and had the Morgan grand champion. She finished first in Morgan open pleasure driving, in Morgan English pleasure and in Morgan Western pleasure. She was first in Morgan registered hunter pleasure.
Gauger also finished first in open Western pleasure 50 and over. She finished second in open walk-trot 18 and over, third in open mare at halter and third in open gelding at halter.
Grinnell exhibitor wins for Charolais
DES MOINES — Rylie Smith, of Grinnell, took top honors in two categories at the Iowa State Charolais Cattle Show last month.
Smith had the first-place summer yearling female and earned champion intermediate female.
Angus exhibitors take home awards
DES MOINES — Powehiek, Iowa and Benton County exhibitors earned awards during the Iowa State Fair Angus Show last month.
Brylee Fisk, of Montezuma, took eighth place in junior heifer calf March 2024 and after and third in junior heifer calf February 2024.
Fisk finished sixth in early senior heifer calf September and October 2023 and third in early junior yearling heifer January 2023. She finished second in early senior yearling heifer September and October 2022.
Fisk showed the reserve champion senior female.
Siek Ranch of Blairstown took fourth in early senior heifer calf September and October 2023 and Jackson Hartkemeyer, of Keystone, finished seventh.
Williamsburg’s Erica Driscoll took fourth in early summer yearling heifer May and June 2023 and fourth in April junior yearling heifer.
Ava Siek, of Blairstown, finished fifth in March junior yearling heifer and fourth in early junior yearling heifer January 2023.
Kaden Latcham, of Grinnell, took fourth in early junior yearling heifer January 2023.
Andy Driscoll, of Williamsburg, had the third-place late senior bull calf November and December 2023.
Upah named to dean’s list
STORM LAKE — Gwenyth Upah, from Chelsea, was named to Buena Vista University's summer dean’s list.
The dean’s list recognizes students achieving a 3.5 grade-point average or higher for the term.
Hereford farms earn honors
DES MOINES — Carlee Cremeens, of Williamsburg, finished third in polled spring yearling heifer in the Iowa State Fair Hereford Show.
Carter Atkinson, of Belle Plaine, finished fourth.
Cole Schanbacher, of Newhall, took second place in polled spring yearling heifer. He finished third and fifth with spring yearling bull.
Red Angus judged at fair
DES MOINES — CB2 won several awards for its Red Angus cattle during the Iowa State Fair.
CB2 took first place in March Heifer calf and showed the champion spring heifer calf.
CB2 finished first in February heifer calf and third in January heifer calf.
Avary Helmrichs, of Marengo, finished second in percentage senior intermediate heifer and showed the reserve percentage female.
Macaroon bakers compete
DES MOINES — Emily Cahoy, of Marengo, won second place for her macaroons at the Iowa State Fair in August.
Entries were judged on taste, technique and presentation.
Judges award Simmental ribbons
DES MOINES — Rylie Smith, of Grinnell placed first in foundation junior female in the Simmental cattle show at the Iowa State Fair in August.
Rylie Timm, of Guernsey, placed fourth in foundation senior female, and Grinnell’s Kolton Kline placed third in purebred junior female.
Samantha N. Zahradnik, of Belle Plaine, showed the sixth-place purebred senior female.
Top honors awarded for Shorthorn
DES MOINES — The Long Family, of Vinton, showed the third-place late spring heifer calf in the Iowa State Fair shorthorn cattle show in August.
The Long Family finished fourth in early spring heifer calf and third in early spring yearling female.
The Long Family had the first-place junior yearling female and the reserve champion senior yearling female.
Long Family finished first and second in group of two females and first in early spring bull calf.
The Long Family had the champion early spring bull calf and finished first in early spring yearling bull. The Long Family showed the champion junior bull.
The Long Family group of two bulls finished first in super cow, in get of sire and in breeders herd.
The Long Family finished third in early spring heifer calf and third in early spring heifer calf. The farm’s early spring heifer calf finished fourth.
In the junior heifer calf category, Long Family finished second. The Long Family was second in senior heifer calf, sixth in late spring yearling female and second in get of sire.
