Boer goats win at fair
DES MOINES — Area residents won ribbons in the Boer Goat Show at the Iowa State Fair in August.
Trig Lee, of South English, finished third in commercial doe 85-89. Rylie Smith, of Grinnell finished sixth, and Alexandra Zahradnik, of Belle Plaine, finished seventh.
Smith took second and fourth in commercial doe 90-94. Layken Lee, of South English finished fifth.
Hannah Siek, of Blairstown, finished fifth in commercial doe 96-99, and Braelyn Brecht, also of Blairstown, finished sixth in commercial doe 101-110.
Trenton Iburg, of Marengo, took second in commercial doe 111-128, and Ashlyn Rose Schultz, of North English, finished sixth.
Of full-blood boer bucks, Dominick Clayton, of Grinnell, finished third in buck kid between three and six months.
Ashlyn Huff, of Montezuma, finished fifth in buck kid from six to nine months.
Clayton took second in full-blood/purebred boer does with a doe kid from three to six months. Iburg finished 11th and 13th.
In doe kid six to nine months, Huff finished eighth.
Huff finished fifth and 10th in yearling doe 16-20 months.
Iburg took ninth place in yearling doe 20-24 months.
Among open market wether and does, Trig Lee showed the sixth place open market wether 70-75 and the third place open market wether 85-88.
Layken Lee showed the fourth-place open market wether 90-93, and Zahradnik took sixth in the category.
Clayton Gorsch had the ninth-place open market wether 97-99, and Braelyn Brecht, of Blairstown, took second in open market wether 100-107.
Clayton finished third in percentage boar does, doe kid six to nine months.
Belle Plaine boar wins at fair
DES MOINES — Mia Brecht of Belle Plaine exhibited the Champion Boar in the Duroc Swine show at Iowa State Fair last month.
Cameyon James, of Searsboro, finished third and fourth in Class 3 boars.
Brecht finished first in Class 4 boars, and James finished fifth in Class 3 gilts.
Brecht was second in Class 4 gilts, and James finished 10th.
Swine exhibitors win honors
DES MOINES — Ryan Iverson, of Grinnell placed sixth in Class 3 gilts in the Hampshire swine show at the state fair in August.
Animals are divided according to farrowing date based on the other animals entered in the competition.
Chester white swine judged
DES MOINES — Lee Becke, of Belle Plaine, earned the Reserve Champion Gilt award and Premier Exhibitor title at the Chester White swine show at the Iowa State Fair.
Randy Schmidt, of Williamsburg, finished first in gilts Class 1; Becker finished second.
Becker finished second and four in gilts Class 2.
Dairy goats win awards
DES MOINES — A Nigerian dwarf dairy goat won third place for an Atkins resident in the Iowa State Fair Dairy Goat Show last month.
Huxley Slaton, showed the third-place goat less than four months old. Slaton also showed the 11th-place goat.
Among goats fourth months to five months old, Slaton’s goats took fifth place and 14th place.
Slaton’s Nigerian dwarfs from a year to two years old, not in milk, finished 12th and 13th.
Slaton finished sixth in junior get of sire and sixth and 10th with goats two to three years old.
Slaton’s four- to five-year-old placed fourth as did Slaton’s mother and daughter set. In produce of doe, Slaton finished fourth; and in breeder’s trio, eighth.
Local Llamas win at fair
DES MOINES — Ray and Dianne Kratville, of Atkins earned awards last month in the Iowa State Fair Llama Show.
The Kratvilles took third and fourth in light wool yearling females from 12 to 24 months.
Doug Deregnier, of North English, finished fourth in medium wool, yearling males from 12 to 24 months. Deregnier took third and fourth in the performance category of advanced freestyle obstacle. He finished first and ninth in novice freestyle obstacle.
Deregnier was second and fourth in advanced PR/companion and fifth in novice PR/companion. He was third and fourth in advanced pack/trail and fourth and eighth in novice pack/trail.
In silky wool, Deregnier finished fourth in yearling females 12 to 24 months.
Belgian, Shire horses win awards
DES MOINES — Participants entered their horses into the Belgian and Shire Horse Show judged at the 2024 Iowa State Fair last month.
Diana Ramsey, of Homestead had the first place Belgian mare yearling and finished second in herdsmanship, five or fewer stalls.
Western Pleasure riders compete
DES MOINES — Western pleasure riders brought their skills to Des Moines to compete in the Open Western Horse Show at the Iowa State Fair last month.
Hailey Jack and Mckenzie Kempf, of Victor, and Reichert of Marengo earned awards in the youth walk/trot horsemanship for ages 13-18.
Kayla Jack, of Victor, placed in the adult walk/trot for ages 19 and older.
Kailor Lown, of North English, Rylee Mauss, of Grinnell, and Alycen and Mckenzie Kempf, of Victor, placed in youth horsemanship.
Reichert finished second in premier Western Pleasure, all ages and first in youth Western Pleasure 13-18. Mckenzie Kempf and Hailey Jack also place in the category.
Kayla Jack, of Victor competed in adult Western Pleasure, 19-49.
Reichert finished second in ranch horse walk/trot 13-18 and first in ranch horse Pleasure 13-18. Reichert also placed in premier ranch riding all ages.
Reichert finished first in ranch horse riding (pattern) 13-18. Rylee Mauss, of Grinnell, also placed.
Reichert finished second in Western walk/trot 12 and younger, and Mckenzie Kempf placed in premier Western walk/trot all ages.
Kailor Lown finished second in Western youth walk/trot 13-18. Mckenzie Kempf and Hailey Jack also placed.
Reichert placed in two- and three-year-old halter mares and geldings and in all ages color breed halter.
Alycen Kempf placed in all ages quarter horse halter.
Jack and Mauss placed in premier showmanship, and Jack, Mauss, Lown and Kempf place in showmanship 13-18
Mauss finished second in youth walk/trot hunter under saddle 18 and under and third in premier hunter under saddle all ages.
Mauss also placed in youth hunter under saddle 18 and under.
