Hogs judged in Tamworth show
DES MOINES — Joel Olson, of Atkins, finished fourth in Class 4 gilts in the Tamworth Swine Show at the Iowa State Fair last month.
Reagan and Riley Gibson, of Panora, showed the champion hog.
Medical students receive white coats
WEST DES MOINES — Erin Clarke, or Norway, was one of 438 Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences students from five programs to receive their white coats during the university's annual White Coat Ceremony Sept. 13.
Located in West Des Moines, Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences offers 10 graduate-level professional degree programs
Reunion set for Hartwick alumni
Stevan Ryan and Karen Hensler will host the Hartwick School Reunion at the Hartwick Fire Station Saturday, Sept. 28.

Gardener wins State Fair honors
DES MOINES — Gardeners from across the state brought their best vegetables to Des Moines to compete in the vegetable and herb contests at the Iowa State Fair.
Betsy Cranston, of Deep River, placed second in Swiss chard and in Greek trinity of herbs — oregano, thyme and sage.
Cranston’s basil and chives finished first and her cilantro, second.
Cranston’s stevia was second and her tarragon, third.
Atkins man places with swine
DES MOINES — Joel Olson, of Atkins, finished third in Class 3 gilts in the Hereford swine show at the Iowa State Fair.
Olson’s Class 1 boars took second place in the spotted swine show. He finished seventh in Class 1 gilts and eighth in Class 2 gilts.
Olson finished first in Class 4 gilts.
FFA swine compete
DES MOINES — One hundred fifty-seven exhibitors entered 209 pigs into the Registered Gilt class and 197 exhibitors entered 235 pigs into the Commercial Gilt class at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.
Justin Engelking, with Benton Community FFA in Van Horne showed the champion Landrace gilt and the reserve champion Poland China gilt.
Charlotte Sieren, of Mid-Prairie FFA in Wellman showed the champion spotted gilt.
Engelking had the champion Tamworth gilt.
Aden Wolfe, with Grinnell FFA showed the champion Yorkshire gilt.
Benton Community finished seventh as a chapter. Williamsburg FFA finished eighth and Grinnell FFA ninth.
FFA members show breeding beef
DES MOINES — One hundred-sixty-two exhibitors showed 216 animals in the FFA Breeding Beef show at the Iowa State Fair.
Tanner Curtin, with Williamsburg FFA, won fourth place overall breeding heifer.
Rylie Timm of HLV FFA, Victor, won Reserve Champion Cow/Calf.
Mariana Stevenson, with Williamsburg FFA, showed the champion shorthorn. Curtin showed the champion Simmental.
Rylie Timm, with HLV FFA in Victor, was awarded reserve champion in cow/calf all other breeds.
Williamsburg FFA finished eighth as a chapter.
Program to give garden tips
WILLIAMSBURG — As the gardening season wraps up, Williamsburg Public Library will host “Putting Your Garden to Bed,” a program by the Master Gardeners of Iowa County.
Master Gardeners will offer advice on garden cleanup, seed saving and soil preparation for next spring Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1:30 p.m.
Gardeners are encouraged to bring their seeds for donation to the library for next season’s planting.
