North English needs trunk-or-treat organizations
NORTH ENGLISH — The North English Community Club is planning its annual trunk-or-treat event for Thursday, Oct. 31 from 4-6 p.m. in the parking lot of the English Valleys Residential Care Center at 150 W Washington St. in North English.
Businesses and community members are welcome to add trunks to this event by calling, texting or emailing the Club at 319-343-8188 or NECommunityClub@gmail.com
FFA members compete in rabbit show
DES MOINES — FFA members exhibited 255 rabbits in the FFA Rabbit Show at the Iowa State Fair.
Kirsten Pettit, with Vinton-Shellsburg FFA, showed the Lionhead reserve champion, and Drew Ballard, with Benton Community FFA in Van Horne, showed the mini lop champion.
Benton Community FFA finished second as a chapter.
Students graduate from Mount Mercy
CEDAR RAPIDS — Mount Mount Mercy University released the names of students who graduated in August.
Among them was Karen Cooling, of Victor, who graduated with a Master of Science degree in education.
Banners awarded sheep show
DES MOINES — Kelly Cox of Macksburg received the Grand Champion banner at the Wether Sire/Dam Sheep show judged at the Iowa State Fair.
Erik Chapman, of Williamsburg, finished fifth with his white face ewe lamb. Samantha Zahradnik, of Belle Plaine, finished eighth.
Kelly Werner, of Grinnell, placed third in speckled face ewe lamb and eighth in black face ram lamb. Werner placed 12th in white face/speckled face ram lamb.
Chapman placed eighth with his black face ewe lamb 89-109.5 pounds. Samantha Zahradnik placed tenth.
Chapman was seventh in black face ewe lamb 110-117 pounds and placed seventh with his white or speckled face ram lamb.
Alexandra Zahradnik, of Belle Plaine, placed 13th in black face ewe lamb 134-140.5 pounds and placed ninth in black face ram lamb.
Samantha Zahradnik finished sixth in black face ram lamb 154.5-167 pounds. She placed 11th in black face ram lamb.
Suffolk breeders compete
DES MOINES — Krafka Harkema Suffolks 5, of Montezuma, finished first in the shorn yearling ram category in the Suffolk Sheep show at the Iowa State Fair.
Krafka Harkema finished first and fourth in shorn ram lamb — all ages, and second in pair of ram lambs.
Krafka Harkema Suffolks finished third and eighth in shorn yearling ewe and eighth in pair of yearling ewes.
In shorn ewe lamb — all ages, Krafka Harkema finished second and seventh. Krafka finished ninth with its pair of ewe lambs and ninth in pair of lambs.
Krafka finished seventh in young flock and fourth in flock.
