Accountants release landfill audit
DES MOINES — Roof, Gerdes, Erlbacher, certified public accountants in Des Moines, released an audit report on the Regional Environmental Improvement Commission of Iowa County last week.
REIC operates the Iowa County landfill near Homestead.
The Commission’s receipts totaled $1,857,936 for the fiscal year ending June 30 a 110% increase from the previous year. The increase is due primarily to an increase in receipts from gate fees, the auditors said.
Disbursements totaled $1,481,993, a 40% increase from last year. The increase is due to an increase in construction projects.
Roof, Gerdes, Erlbacher reported six findings, found on pages 23-26 of the report, which address issues such as lack of segregation of duties, preparation of financial statements, lack of a written investment policy and concerns about the 28E agreement.
The auditors provided recommendations to address each of the findings. All six findings were repeated from the previous year.
A copy of the audit report is available for review at auditor.iowa.gov/reports/audit-reports.
