BELLE PLAINE — Belle Plaine and Moravia put on an offensive show in the first half of last Friday’s Class 8 District 7 showdown at Belle Plaine, scoring nine touchdowns and 67 points between them.
Unfortunately for the Plainsmen, who got the better of that first half, leading 38-29, they couldn’t keep pace offensively with the Mohawks in the second half, getting outscored 24-8 to lose 53-46.
Total yards were nearly even, 370 for Belle Plaine, 367 for Moravia. Both teams passed for four touchdowns, rushed for two, had five 2-point conversions and no turnovers.
The difference? A 77-yard kickoff return by Mohawks senior Wyatt Throckmorton for a touchdown.
Moravia senior quarterback Shane Heimick had a big night against Belle Plaine’s defense, which the week before forced 10 turnovers in a 92-6 win over Melcher-Dallas.
Heimick completed 17 of 21 passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns, and rushed 15 times for 95 yards and another score.
Throckmorton and Jackson McDaniel each caught six of Heimick’s passes, good for 142 total yards and two TDs apiece.
Plainsmen junior Ty Alcott put up some good numbers himself, completing 8 of 13 passes for 128 yards and four TDs, and rushing 38 times for 157 yards and one score.
Sam DeMeulenaere and Riley Simmons each caught two of Alcott’s TD passes, and Lane Vokoun added a rushing TD for Belle Plaine.
The Mohawks improved their record to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the district, while the Plainsmen fell to 2-2, 1-1.
After two straight home games, Belle Plaine travels to Brooklyn this week to face the 2-1 BGM Bears, and Moravia stays on the road for a non-district game against the 2-1 Southeast Warren Warhawks.
