MONROE — It all came down to a kick, and PCM’s Dominic Witt delivered.
Witt drilled a 36-yard field goal as time expired to give the Mustangs the 23-21 win over Williamsburg Friday night in an out-of-district football game.
Trailing 20-7 in the fourth quarter, Williamsburg rallied to take a 21-20 lead with 5:27 remaining.
In a drive that started at the Williamsburg 20, Cash Brown led an efficient drive with three first downs on passes before making a nice scramble on third down for an 11-yard score.
After a forced three-and-out, Brown delivered again on third down, this time on a deep pass caught by Kale Bailey, who ran in for the 61-yard score.
Brown, a sophomore making his second start, threw for 252 yards in the game and added another 49 yards on the ground.
“He’s just getting more comfortable,” head coach Austin Blythe said. “He’s a young player, as really a lot of out guys are, with not a ton of experience.”
After the Raiders took the 21-20 lead, the Mustangs were able to piece together a drive to set up the winning field goal.
A penalty on a fourth-and-seven at the Raiders 49 was key in the game. Mustangs quarterback Chase Wagaman threw an incomplete pass to receiver Alex Wendt, but a pass interference call on the Raiders kept the drive alive.
Penalties hurt the Raiders throughout the game.
“Hopefully we learned that we can do it,” Blythe said of the team’s comeback in the fourth. “We just have to make a choice that we can before then.”
“Credit to PCM, they played hard until the end.”
The Raiders made several key stops inside the 10 to keep them in the game until the end.
The first half was dominated by punts, nine total.
Each team put together one scoring drive. Williamsburg’s ended with a 62-yard receiving touchdown by Grady Wetjen.
PCM was putting together a scoring drive at the end of the half. At the one, with 33 seconds remaining, the Mustangs elected to pass.
Wagaman was hit as he threw the ball, and the Raiders recovered the fumble.
The Mustangs opened the second half driving all the way to the two-yard line, but after a tackle for loss, settled for a short 22-yard field goal.
To start the fourth, the Mustangs were driving once more and were at the six-yard line. A penalty and third down stop made them settle for another field goal for a 20-7 lead.
Wagaman threw for 257 yards for the Mustangs, with Gavin Steenhoek and Wendt both going over 100 receiving yards. Jax Strait had 115 yards on the ground.
Williamsburg’s leading receiver was Bailey, with four catches for 94 yards.
“We just have to execute,” Blythe said following the game. “We need to get better in a hurry. It’s a we thing, it’s not a you, or us, or anybody else. It’s a we thing.”
Williamsburg (1-2) will face Cedar Rapids Xavier at home Friday.
