PFLAG Grinnell/Poweshiek hosts ice cream social

GRINNELL — The PFLAG Grinnell/Poweshiek chapter will have a free Ice Cream Social Monday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.at the Grinnell United Methodist Church Friendship Center, just inside the church entrance on Park Street.
PFLAG is the largest and oldest organization in the country that supports and advocates for LGBTQ individuals and their families.
The PFLAG Grinnell/Poweshiek chapter became a registered non-profit in May and launched its inaugural membership drive in June, the organization said in a press release.
PFLAG’s outreach efforts have been well received with over 56 individuals and households joining as paying members thus far, the press release says.
Annual membership funds mostly support the local organization though a portion of each fee is used for national efforts. Membership starts at $15 for students, $25 for individuals and $40 per household.

The ice cream social is open to anyone interested in learning about PFLAG, the organization said. The event will include an overview of the goals of PFLAG, introduction of the board members and announcement of planned fall meetings and events.
Dari Barn is donating part of the ice cream that will be served, and there will be a wide variety of toppings to choose from.
The group Facebook page, PFLAG Grinnell Poweshiek, is used to share updates on local activities as well as support resources. The pflag.org website provides a range of resources, including free videos and pdf guides, to offer support and guidance for those who want to learn more or offer better support for LGBTQ loved ones.
