DES MOINES — The Belle Plaine boys medaled in two events Friday on day two of the State Track and Field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines and qualified for the finals in two others.
To start off the afternoon session, the Plainsmen nearly made podium from the second heat in the distance medley, running a new school record of 3:34.22.
“We’ve been working hard all year, so it feels good to finally be able to empty the tank and give it everything,” 800-meter anchor Lucas Eichhorn said. “We’re happy with it.”
Eichhorn, who also will run in the open 800 today, ran a strong anchor leg to propel the Plainsmen to winning the second heat by a margin.
Also placing in the distance medley, was English Valleys, thanks to a 1:55 closing 800 from Gage Heyne. The Bears finished fifth in a new school record of 3:34.79.
Belle Plaine’s Sam DeMeulenaere placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, closing what has been a breakout season for the Plainsmen senior in the event.
“I thought the race went well,” DeMeulenaere said. “I improved where I was in the standings. I made the decision to switch focus to this event this year, and I think it worked out pretty good for me.“
Advancing to finals today, was Belle Plaine’s Lane Vokoun in the 110 hurdles and their 4x400 relay.
In a race in which the winner ran a new 1A state record, Iowa Valley finished fourth in the 4x200. A strong close from anchor Caleb Haack propelled the Tigers into the top four.
The time of 1:29.91 was a new season best.
The Tigers also qualified for the finals in the 4x400.
BGM, HLV-TC and Montezuma all concluded their state meets in Friday’s competition.
BGM’s Dakota Heishman finished 16th in the 110 hurdles, HLV-TC’s Aiden Van Waus was 15th in the 400 hurdles and Montezuma was 21st in the 4x100.
