BELLE PLAINE — Belle Plaine’s Aidan Timm came into Friday’s contest banged up.
Timm, one of just three seniors for the football team, was not going to let that stop him from making an impact on both sides of the ball in a 52-26 win over HLV-TC in an 8-player District 5 matchup.
Through nearly a half, Timm was just playing snaps on defense. That all changed on Belle Plaine’s final offensive possession in the second quarter.
Timm came back in to play his usual starting quarterback role and delivered a first-down run with an emphatic truck move at the end.
That was followed up with a 23-yard passing touchdown to Wade Sankot.
“It was fun,” Timm said of getting to play some offense. “It was just a bone bruise, so I’m feeling a lot better.”
The Plainsmen led 30-6 at half and put this one away minutes into the third, scoring three touchdowns in 4 1/2 minutes of play.
Timm added a rushing score and a 50-yard TD pass to Peyton Dostal before being taken out again as the Plainsmen led 52-6.
When Timm was not on offense in the first half, the Plainsmen got a heavy load of runs from Wade Sankot and Dostal.
Sankot had two rushing scores to go along with his receiving TD, and Dostal added a 34-yard rushing TD on the end-around.
“It was fun working with Wade, as he is a senior,” Dostal said. “I worked hard for them.”
Dostal has become a versatile receiver and runner for the team this season, bringing speed with the physical running that Timm and Wade Sankot provide.
HLV-TC’s first two scores came from Cael Weisskopf.
The Warriors’ running back scored on a 12-yard TD run in the first and a 24-yard receiving TD in the fourth.
Trailing 52-6 in the fourth, the Warriors put up 20 points in the fourth, four coming from safeties off bad snaps from the Plainsmen backups.
Bryer Jack also scored from 22-yards out in the fourth for HLV-TC.
The win put Belle Plaine at 3-4 overall after a 0-3 start, but more importantly, the Plainsmen are 3-1 in district play, a great position from which to clinch a playoff spot.
“The first couple weeks were rough,” Timm said. “We all have gotten better as a team in everything.”
With a young team that lost a lot of key production, it took continued work in practice for the Plainsmen to get better.
“It was hard to learn,” Dostal said of adjusting to a bigger role. “We put the work in, and it feels good seeing it pay off. We worked hard at practice and got better in drills.”
Belle Plaine will finish off the regular season Friday at Winfield-Mt. Union (2-4).
HLV-TC will close with two non-district games, both at home. The first comes Friday against Janesville (4-4), then Cedar Ridge Christian (3-4).
The game against Cedar Ridge Christian was added as both teams have been eliminated from playoff contention. Teams are allowed to add extra games during the first round of 8-player playoffs the 24th.
