WINTHROP — The Plainsmen baseball team fell to East Buchanan 4-0, ending their season in the second round of district play.
For the first four innings it was a pitching duel between East Buchanan’s Brady Van Scoyoc and Belle Plaine’s Wade Sankot.
East Buchanan scored in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to seal the victory.
Rhett Parrott and Nate Hoover had two hits each for the Plainsmen, and Sankot pitched five innings, allowing no earned runs.
Belle Plaine finishes the season with a .500, 11-11 record.
“I’m extremely proud of the way our guys played this season,” Belle Plaine head coach Matthew Mengler said.
“After graduating five seniors last year, we had a lot of questions marks. The growth as a team and from individuals has been phenomenal.”
The Plainsmen were competitive in a majority of games this season, which Coach Mengler credits to their work ethic and character. Half the lineup were freshmen.
The Plainsmen say goodbye to seniors Nate Hoover and Rhett Parrott.
“Nate stepped up his game on the mound this year and was a rock in the middle of the infield for us. Rhett became the captain of our outfield moving from left to center, and his experience helped guide our freshman,” Mengler said of his seniors.
“Their leadership will be tough to replace next year.”
