Poweshiek County 4-Hers bring home ribbons

The results are in, and Poweshiek County 4-Hers did well at the Iowa State Fair.
Seven members of the Junior Master Gardeners, led by Betsy Cranston, were old enough to participate at the fair.
The 4-H Horticulture show took place Aug. 10 with more than 100 entries. Poweshiek County earned 15 grand champion, or first-place ribbons, 17 reserve champion, or second-place ribbons, and 13 third-place awards.
Eighteen counties were represented in 611 total entries.
Poweshiek County won first place overall as a county. Among the Top 10 youth exhibitors were William Schalmo, who placed seventh, Grace Schalmo, ninth, and Slane McCue, who placed 10th.
Special honors went to Slane McCue as champion herb exhibitor, Seeger McCue with champion first-year exhibitor’s class vegetable platter, and William Schalmo as reserve champion vegetable container display.
The seven participants achieved champion and reserve champion placings for their county vegetable planters. Grace and William Schalmo, Hanna, Seeger, and Slane McCue, Rosie Leasure and Carleigh Klein received purple ribbons.
In horticulture garden crops, green beans, Rosie Leasure earned purple ribbons, and Carleigh Klein and Seeger McCue had blues.
For purple snap beans, Hanna McCue earned a first-place purple, and Seeger McCue earned blue.
For yellow wax beans, William Schalmo earned a red riboon. Grace Schalmo earned a first-place blue ribbon, and William Schalmo earned a second-place blue with beets.
Slane McCue had a second blue ribbon and Rosie Leasure had a third red for round cabbage.
With Red Cabbage, William Schalmo earned a first-place purple ribbon and a red ribbon. Grace Schalmo earned a second-place blue, Carleigh Klein a third-place blue, and Seeger McCue a blue.
William also received the first-place purple Swiss chard.
Showing jumbo cabbage, William Schalmo had the first-place purple, Hanna McCue won second-place blue, and Grace Schalmo had a blue.
Showing cucumbers for slicing, William Schalmo received a second blue.
Cucumbers: dill, Rosie Leasure, second-place purple; Carleigh Klein third-place blue; Grace Schalmo, blue.
William Schalmo earned a red ribbon with his eggplant and third-place blue with a small watermelon.
Grace Schalmo had the second-place purple small watermelon. Slane McCue received red for garlic.
Showing onions and receiving blue ribbons were Hanna McCue (2), Carleigh Klein (2), Slane McCue, Rosie Leasure, Grace Schalmo and William Schalmo. Receiving reds were Rosie Leasure and Hanna McCue (2).
Rosie Leasure received a blue ribbon for red potatoes. Seeger McCue, Grace Schalmo and William Schalmo received red ribbons.
William Schalmo received a blue ribbon for white potatoes, and Hanna McCue, Slane McCue, Grace Schalmo, and Carleigh Klein received reds.
Grace Schalmo, Rosie Leasure and Carleigh Klein received blue ribbons for yellow/gold potatoes. Hanna McCue received a red.
In jumbo potatoes, Slane McCue had the first-place purple ribbon, and William Schalmo had the second-place purple.
Grace Schalmo received a blue for her summer squash. William Schalmo had a third-place blue and Grace Schalmo a red for winter acorn type squash.
Receiving blues for other varieties of winter squash were Grace Schalmo (2) and William Schalmo. For their other vegetables, Slane McCue, Hanna McCue, and Rosie Leasure received blues and Slane McCue received a red.
Carleigh Klein had a first and third purple with her sweet bell peppers.
William Schalmo had the first and third purple with his sweet peppers, and Grace Schalmo a blue.
Seeger McCue got a purple for jalapeno peppers. Hanna McCue, Grace Schalmo (2), William Schalmo, and Rosie Leasure had blues.
William Schalmo had a purple with hot green chili peppers, and Slane McCue had two reds with hot green serrano peppers.
Rosie Leasure had a first-place purple for tomatillo, husk on, and Slane McCue earned a second-place purple.
Carleigh Klein had a third-place purple for cherry type tomato, small, red.
Grace Schalmo and William Schalmo earned red ribbons, and Grace Schalmo earned white.
Carleigh Klein earned red in red slicing tomato. Grace Schalmo received a blue for cherry type tomato, large, red.
Carleigh Klein received first-place purple and Slane McCue third-pace purple for any other color of cherry tomato.
Carleigh Klein, Grace Schalmo, and William Schalmo received purples, and Rosie Leasure, Slane McCue, Seeger McCue, and Hanna McCue received blues.
William Schalmo had a blue ribbon for a cocktail red tomato. He also had a second-place purple ribbon for vegetable container display.
Grace Schalmo had a blue and a red.
William Schalmo took first and third place with purple ribbons in vegetables of the same color platter.
Grace Schalmo had a second-place purple and a blue, and Hanna McCue had a blue.
In horticulture herbs, Slane McCue received first-place purple and second-place blue for chives, Seeger McCue received third-place blue, and Hanna McCue received red.
Slane McCue received second-place blue for dill.
Grace Schalmo received third-place blue, for mint. Hanna and Slane McCue received blues, Hanna McCue and William Schalmo, red, and Seeger McCue, white.
Showing sage, Hanna McCue earned a first-place purple, Slane McCue a second-place purple and third-place blue.
Grace Schalmo earned a blue, and William Schalmo had two reds.
Hanna McCue and Slane McCue received blues for any other individual herb.
In this year’s Communications events, Gracie Kaufman received a seal of excellence (Goats 101), Weston Duke received a Seal of Merit (Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goat Breed), Seeger McCue received a Seal of Merit (Fencing), Lucy Turley received a Seal of Merit (Audience Etiquette) and Hanna McCue (Barn Quilts) and Slane McCue received Certificates of Recognition.
Hanna McCue received a Seal of Merit for her working exhibit.
Participation ribbons were awarded for Share the Fun performances to William Schalmo, Weston Duke, and Grace Schalmo.
Cameyon James’ exhibit in veterinary science received a blue ribbon. Gracie Kaufman’s poster also received a blue.
Breah Lowry’s photo was considered for the Professional Photographers of Iowa Award. She received blue ribbons for two other photos.
Peyton Tindle received a blue ribbon, as did Morgan Hay and Alyssa Latcham. Grace Schalmo and William Schalmo received red ribbons.
Matthew Turley, and Maggie Manatt were given reds ribbons for original visual arts. Gracie Kaufman, Slane McCue, Clara Erickson, Gabriel Bahrenfuse and Sheldyn Goodrich received blues.
Morgan Hay and Olivia Beyer received blues ribbons in design, process or technique of visual arts.
Olivia Beyer received a blue ribbon for sewn garment or accessory. William Manatt’s poster, “How to Tie a Tie” earned a blue ribbon among educational exhibits.
Grace Burnett’s blue Cookie Monster cookies received a blue ribbon. Maggie Manatt’s multigrain seed no-knead bread received a blue.
Isabella and Maci Tesdall earned blues and Slane McCue a red for educational displays.
Clara Erickson received a blue for her refinished toddler-size wooden chair.
Maggie Manatt received a blue ribbon for an oven mitt in sewing and needle arts, and Grace Schalmo received a blue ribbon for a crocheted, dark purple cardigan.
Clara Erickson received a blue for her star-pattern baby quilt.
In citizenship and civic engagement, Lucy Turley’s poster on audience etiquette received a blue ribbon.
Tristan Graff’s black cow silhouette planter and William Schalmo’s puzzle box, received blue ribbons.
Andrew Arkema, Rylie Smith and Zane Iverson received blue ribbons in beef showmanship. Brooke Conover received a purple.
Rylie Smith showed the purple-ribbon champion bred and owned Charolais heifer and reserve champion Charolais breeding beef.
Zane Iverson exhibited a maintainer breeding beef and received a purple ribbon.
Shay Rodgers had the purple-ribbon champion Chianina market beef and reserve grand champion steer.
Brooke Conover earned a purple ribbon with the champion Maine-Anjou market beef and received a blue with her crossbred steer.
Rhylee Rodgers’ crossbred steer won a purple ribbon, division two reserve champion and was fourth overall.
Gavin Fisk’s crossbred steer won a blue ribbon, and Andrew Arkema’s market heifer earned purple.
Lindsey Henry showed the grand champion Ayrshire Sr. and received a purple ribbon. Her Guernsey fall heifer received a purple and her Holstein spring heifer a red. Her Holstein Yearling Heifer went purple and Holstein Four Year Old Cow blue.
Morgan Hay earned a red ribbon with her dog in senior handling, and Emma Weeks got blue in dog obedience. Both girls got purple in intermediate dog rally.
Dayton Mortvedt received a first-place purple and had the Division ll champion and grand champion doe.
In breeding meat goats under one year, Rylie Smith had a first-place purple, Division lll third honorable mention and third-place purple. She also received a blue in intermediate showmanship.
Alayna Huff had a blue with her doe over one year.
In market goat wether classes, Macey Heishman had a purple, Tyler Conover a blue, Brock Mortvedt a first-place purple and Division lV champion and reserve grand champion.
Dayton Mortvedt had a Division V fourth honorable mention and first-place purple.
Cameyon James received a first-place purple and reserve bantam single comb clean legged bird, a second-place and two third-place purple ribbons, a first-place and two third-place blues and two other blues for his bantam chickens.
Jase Aldridge earned two blues in showmanship with posters in the rabbit show. Cameyon James had a second-place purple with his junior fancy doe and a second-place blue. His junior fancy buck earned a third-place blue, and his senior doe received a first-place blue, best of variety and second blue.
In the Dorset lamb class, Alyssa Bos received a blue. Carleigh Klein received a blue with her white face commercial ewe.
Alyssa Bos, Alyssa Latcham received blues with their black face commercial ewes. Kaylia Fuchs received a first-place purple, Division 1 black face ewe champion, and a purple ribbon.
Abby Bos had a blue with a speckled face market lamb. Alyssa Latcham received blue for a black face market lamb.
Dayton Mortvedt had three first-place purples and a second-place purple with black face market lambs.
Brock Mortvedt had a third-place purple. Anna Slagle earned a second-pace purple and a blue with black face market lamb.
Abby Bos, Alyssa Bos, and Carleigh Klein received blue ribbons in junior showmanship. Kaylia Fuchs received a purple ribbon and an eighth-place honorable mention in intermediate showmanship.
Cameyon James earned a blue for his Duroc swine and a blue with a Poland China. He received a blue in other breeds.
Charly Fenner received a blue with a Yorkshire. She received two blues with her commercial gilts.
Anthony Wolfe received a first-place purple with a commercial gilt.
Also receiving blues with commercial gilts were Kinze Lacaeyse, Ilee Lacaeyse, and Maggie Dayton (2).
Aden Wolfe earned purple for his Chester white, and Anna Slagle a second-place purple reserve champion Chester white market hog.
Abby Bos had a blue with a Duroc market pig. Anthony Wolfe earned a blue with his Yorkshire and purple with his other breed market swine.
Abby Bos, Aden Wolfe, Charly Fenner, Leyton Lacaeyse and Brayson Latcham received blues for crossbred market gilts.
Anna Slagle earned a second-place purple.
Aden Wolfe and Rylee Rodgers won second-place purple ribbons in crossbred market barrows and each had another purple.
Shay Rodgers earned a blue and a first-place purple. Kinze Lacaeyse had a purple. Leyton Lacaeyse, Cameyon James and Brayson Latcham had blues.
Anthony Wolfe earned a second-place purple and was reserve champion junior showman.
Abby Bos won a blue in junior showmanship.
