Prairie Invitational kicks off season for Williamsburg

CEDAR RAPIDS — Williamsburg prefers a strong field to open the season against.
That is why its cross country team has added the Prairie Invitational in recent years before the traditional home meet opener.
The Prairie Invitational, run along the Cedar Rapids Prairie campus, had some of the best runners in the state kicking off their seasons Saturday morning.
Channing Becker improved by 28 seconds from her time last season to finish 11th overall (fourth in orange division) in 20:18.1. The sophomore’s time was a girls school record at the course.
Edie Axmear also notched a top-10 finish in the orange division.
As a team, the Williamsburg girls finished sixth overall and runner-up by just four points in the orange division to Class 3A No. 8 Fort Madison.
On the boys’ side, Marcus Pirkl led the way in a time of 17:53, finishing eighth in the orange division.
The boys finished third in the orange division with 110 points, edging Class 2A No. 12 Monticello by one point.
Iowa City West EarlyBird
IOWA CITY — English Valleys opened its season Thursday in Iowa City at the Ashton cross-country Course where the University of Iowa competes.
The meet was small but was mostly Class 4A schools.
On the girls’ side, sophomore Anna Luers opened her season with a top-10 finish, placing eighth in 20:29.3. Kaylynn Caster finished 17th.
In boys competition, the Bears saw a close pack of three (Isaac Frazier, Will Luers, Evan Koehn), finish within nine seconds of each other.
Bobcat Early Bird
MARSHALLTOWN — In a large field of 16 teams, Belle Plaine elected to run its varsity teams in the junior varsity races Thursday at Marshalltown Community College.
Elyse Jacobi led the way for the girls with a sixth-place finish. The team placed fifth of seven scoring teams.
The boys saw a top 10 finish from Devin Timm, who finished seventh in 21:00.9. The team placed fifth.
Collins-Maxwell Invite
CAMBRIDGE — BGM opened its season Thursday at Center Grove Orchard in Cambridge and had a complete scoring team in both girls and boys races, something BGM didn’t have last season.
The boys finished fourth of five scoring teams and were led by a 13th place finish from Carter Corona in 20:29.7 Jacon Bosenberg finished 15th.
The girls were led by a 14th place finish from Gracie Shook.
