A strong field of teams was on hand Thursday, March 30, as Williamsburg opened the 2023 boys’ golf season with a respectable performance in the Solon Invitational at Lake Macbride Golf Course.
Coach Brad Schaefer’s Raiders totaled 338 strokes in the 18-hole tourney to place fifth out of nine schools. The host Spartans, Class 3A state runners-up the last two years, won the meet with a 317. Clear Creek Amana finished second with a 325, Tipton was third with a 326 and West Liberty fourth with a 335.
Senior Trey O’Neil, junior Crew Klinger and freshman Cooper Bott shared the low individual score for Williamsburg. O’Neil shot a 41-43-84, and Klinger and Bott both shot 43-41-84. Junior Bryce Yearian added a 42-44-86 and senior David Mullnix chipped in a 45-44-89.
Tipton senior Tristin Sorgenfrey was meet medalist, firing a 5-under-par 67 on rounds on 36 and 31. His final round featured four birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole.
Solon sophomore Isaiah Zoske was runner-up medalist, just one stroke behind Sorgenfrey, with a 35-33-68. Par is 36-36-72.
