WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg volleyball team cruised to a three-set victory over Chariton Tuesday night in the first round of regional play in class 3A.
In the entirety of the match the Raiders trailed only once, down 1-0 to start set three.
It is the first regional victory for the Raiders since 2020.
“It goes to show the improvements we’ve made,” Williamsburg head coach Brittni Powell said. “To get a home game, it kinda just goes to show how we have worked all season for this.
“But business isn’t done,” Powell said.
The Raiders now have their sights on a second round victory Thursday.
Kylee Suhr started things off for the Raiders in set one with three kills and a block in the team’s first eight points.
After kills from Clarissa Suhr and Taylor Otte, the Raiders were up 13-3.
Kalon Spratt had a run of three straight aces midway through the set to extend the lead.
The Raiders coasted to a 25-6 set victory, ending it with a Kylee Suhr kill.
The Raiders built another big lead in set two, going up 13-1.
Ava Hocker and Kylee Suhr each had two aces early.
Kills from Charitons’s Landry Hall and Lucy Stratton ended the run.
The Chargers had a lot of out-of-bounds shots, which helped the Raiders build leads in each set.
Averi Nielsen ended set two with an ace for a 25-12 victory.
Set three saw much the same for the Raiders.
The Chargers kept it a little closer earlier, but ultimately ended in the same place.
The score was 6-3, and the Raiders went on a run of five kills in six points to pull away.
Kills came from Clarissa Suhr, Otte and Jordyn Skaggs.
Kylee Suhr had three kills and two aces in the last seven points, and the Raiders won set three 25-13.
The Raiders totaled 23 kills from six different players.
The Raiders were efficient and saw more production than usual from the right side.
Next up for the Raiders is a second round regional game at Nevada (29-11) Thursday.
“It’s definitely a winnable game for us if we come in levelheaded like we did tonight and bring the same energy and mindset,” Powell said.
