MOUNT VERNON — The Williamsburg girls, ranked 14th in 3A, know the Wamac can be a grind. That was proven again Friday with a loss to No. 2 Mount Vernon, 52-39.
“They are one of the top-ranked teams in 3A for a reason,” Williamsburg Coach Stephanie Dacey said. “We’re fortunate to play in a conference where you’ve got to be prepared every night. But I wish we had a better game.”
Mount Vernon’s big post Chloe Meester blocked a few shots in the paint early, and that made the Raiders hesitate to take the ball to the rim.
“She has such long arms, it really has to be a perfect pass to our post to get it into the paint,” junior Carly Rich said.
“She’s got three times the amount of blocked shots we do as an entire team,” Dacey said. “She’s 6-2, but has the length like she’s 6-foot-8.”
The Raiders countered with 3-point shooting, but that never got hot enough to keep up with the Mustangs. And Mount Vernon also has guards who harass the opposition at the top of the zone.
“No. 10 (sophomore Courtney Franck) is just incredible with her on-ball defense,” Rich said. “She’s always pressuring the ball. You can’t get very many shots against them.”
No statistics were reported. Williamsburg fell to 5-4.
