WILLIAMSBURG — Competing in four meets in nine days is no easy task, and that’s what the Raiders were up against Monday night at the Williamsburg High School Aquatic Center.
“They did great tonight,” Williamsburg head coach Mindy Wuebker said. “It’s been a long stretch and they’re tired, but they really just fought through tonight.”
The team still had a lot of season bests and performed with energy all evening.
The noise reached its apex in the last event of the night — 400 yard freestyle relay. Swimmers and fans shouted at ear-ringing levels.
Grinnell won the team title, scoring 429 points and winning 10 of the 11 events.
Two BGM swimmers compete on the Grinnell team. The Manatt sisters were both on 400-yard freestyle relay teams, and Payton Manatt was also on a 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Claire Manatt finished seventh in the 100-yard backstroke, and her sister Payton finished right behind in eighth.
The Raiders came in second with 350 points and medaled (placed in the top three) in seven events.
Among the top performances on the night was Selah Smith, who finished second in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:32.42.
“She dropped a few seconds and pulled that off really well and also did really well in 100 backstroke,” Wuebker said.
Other performances that stuck out for Coach Wuebker were those of Emily McGovern in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Kya Dobesh in the 200 freestyle and Bridgette Ridenour and Mackenzie Montross in the100 freestyle.
Dobesh and McGovern placed second in individual events.
The Raiders now get eight days off from competition before they head into the second half of their season.
“The majority of our team is underclassmen, and 16 of those are freshmen,” Wuebker said. “This has been a big and exhausting stretch of meets for them, for the whole team, really.”
For the rest of the season, Wuebker hopes to see improvements in a few areas.
“We’re definitely working on that endurance now and focusing on technique in which we can now pinpoint and fine tune,” Wuebker said following the meet.
Wuebker is still working on the event lineup for the Raiders, finding where they’re best fitted.
“The underclassmen, and especially freshmen, have been bounced around quite a bit in different events and they are adjusting and accommodating well,” Wuebker said.
“It can take some time to figure out where each swimmer fits in best and how they can best help the team.”
