MARION — Williamsburg’s varsity boys’ placed fourth and the girls’ placed sixth at the WaMaC Conference championships Thursday at the Antioch Christian Church in Marion.
“The guys finished as well as we could have possibly hoped,” Williamsburg head coach Nick Nordheim said. “We could have been anywhere from fourth to seventh in the race, so getting fourth was a great performance.”
The boys’ were led by a pack of three — Colin Reed, Nile Busch and Hayes Arwine — who finished 12 seconds apart.
Reed, who finished in 17:31, and Busch, who ran the course in 17:35, earned all-conference honors, placing 16th and 19th in the meet.
Arwine was one spot shy of making all conference.
The varsity girls’ sixth-place finish was not the performance Coach Nordheim was hoping for.
“We didn't do what we wanted to do in the varsity girls’ race,” Nordheim said. “We went out too conservative and let the race get away from us. It was a disappointing finish for sure.”
Channing Becker notched an individual top five finish with a time of 19:48.
“Getting top five in our tough conference as a freshman is truly outstanding,” Nordheim said of Becker’s performance.
Another bright spot for the Raiders was Ashlyn Hoffman’s 27th overall finish.
“I thought Ashlyn really stepped up and had her best race of the year,” Nordheim said.
The Raiders will travel to Waverly for their state qualifier Wednesday.
