Raiders get another ranked dual victory
Plainsmen boys’ with strong showing in North Linn Saturday

Plenty of competition on the mats sent teams into the holiday break. They’ll wait for the new year to wrestle again.
Here’s a quick glance at some area competitions.
Belle Plaine Quad
BELLE PLAINE — The Belle Plaine and BGM boys’ wrestling teams competed at Belle Plaine Tuesday.
The Plainsmen went 2-1 in duals, defeating BCLUW 48-30 and BGM 37-24. They lost a close one to North Tama 28-24.
Jake Buttikofer, Wade Sankot and Derek Kressley finished undefeated for the Plainsmen.
BGM went 1-2, defeating BCLUW 45-35.
Reed Slater and Hunter Nusbaum were undefeated on the night for the Bears.
The BGM girls’ wrestling team was also in action Tuesday night in Belle Plaine, going 2-0 in duals.
Montezuma Quad
MONTEZUMA — The Montezuma boys’ wrestling team went 2-1 at their home quad Tuesday, defeating HLV-TC 39-30 and Cardinal 50-21.
The Braves were down 30-9 in their dual against HLV-TC, but two wins by fall and three forfeit gave them the edge in the end.
Brett and Braxton Plants both went 3-0.
The Warriors went 0-3 on the evening in duals.
Cael Weisskopf (150 pounds) was 3-0, winning by fall, major decision and forfeit.
English Valleys Triangular
NORTH ENGLISH — The English Valleys boys’ wrestling team went 0-2 at its home triangular Tuesday, falling to two conference opponents in Sigourney-Keota and Colfax-Mingo.
In the dual against Colfax-Mingo, the Bears went 2-2 in non-forfeited matches, with wins by Braydon Anderson (157) and Ben Coffman (190).
The English Valleys girls dropped both their duals and lost a close one to Pekin 31-30. Pekin got the extra point by tiebreaker criteria.
Anna Gorsh (120) and Taylor Mikesell (170) were both 2-0 on the night.
Springville Quadrangular
SPRINGVILLE — The HlV-TC boys’ wrestling had a good showing in Springville Thursday night, going 3-1 in duals.
The Warriors defeated North Cedar 30-29, Midland 36-30 and Springville 42-24.
In the dual against North Cedar, the Warriors were down 29-24 heading into the last match, and Bryer Jack delivered with a first period pin.
Williamsburg Trinangular
WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg boys’ wrestling team moved to 9-0 in duals for the season after Thursday, but jumped to 14-0 after Saturday’s performance in Pleasantville.
In the nightcap Thursday, the Raiders faced No. 2 Benton Community in Class 2A, and used a late surge to get their second dual victory of the season against a top five ranked conference opponent.
Down 27-19 with four matches to go, weights 106-126 stepped up to the challenge.
Charlie Foster won by fall, and Riker DeWitt by tech fall to give the Raiders the lead.
Hayden Albaugh won by major decision over Garrett Kuch to seal the dual.
Lincoln Schropp captured his 100th career victory in the dual for the Raiders.
It’s safe to say the Raiders will be ranked higher than 10th in the next list.
The girls’ team was also in action against Grinnell and Benton, winning both duals on senior night.
Iowa Falls-Alden Tournament
IOWA FALLS — The Iowa Valley girls’ wrestling team sent six wrestlers to Iowa Falls Friday.
Four Tigers placed first in the small field.
First place finishers were Eva Kriegel (110), Kennedy Thiessen (115), Skyler Hoyt (125) and Raelene Hawkins (170).
Bubba Randles Winter Classic
CEDAR RAPIDS — The Williamsburg girls had 10 wrestlers compete at Prairie High School Saturday.
Keston Spratt finished runner-up at 120 pounds and is now 16-4 on the season.
Valerie Altenhofen finished third at 140.
English Valleys had three competitors in the field.
Anna Gorsh finished third at 120.
Charger Girls Invitational
CHARITON — BGM’s Shyla VanNevel (120) and Taya Sincox (130) both placed third in Chariton Saturday for the Bears.
The Bears, as a team, scored 79 match points.
North Linn Invitational
TROY MILLS — The Belle Plaine boys’ put up a good showing scoring 149 points with only nine wrestlers Saturday.
The Plainsmen had two champions: Hunter Henry (113) and Aidan Timm (144) both won their first-place matches.
Wade Sankot (157) and Derek Kressley (175) finished runners-up.
Regal Invitational
IOWA CITY — HLV-TC’s Cael Weisskopf (150) defeated Sigourney’s Brody Clark by fall to finish first in Iowa City Saturday.
The Warriors totaled 45.5 match points on the day.
