Raiders get first conference win over Grinnell

WILLIAMSBURG — Three different players scored in double figures as the Williamsburg boys basketball team got its first conference win of the season Tuesday against Grinnell.
The Raiders won 63-53, jumping out to a 14-5 lead after a quarter.
Dylan Weisskopf led the way with 21 points. P.J. Carey added 12 and Grady Wetjen 11.
As a team, the Raiders had nine threes in the game.
Here is a quick look at some other area basketball highlights from the week.
• Montezuma’s Claire Erselius dropped 23 points in a 53-8 girls basketball win over Belle Plaine Thursday. Erselius connected on four three-pointers on an efficient 8-of-14 from the field. The Braves won the boys game 72-42 with four starters scoring in double figures.
• The Williamsburg girls basketball team put on an offensive and defensive clinic in a 61-23 win over Mid-Prairie Monday. The Raider shot 60% percent from the field with all five starters scoring nine-plus points. Taylor Sanchez led the charge with 19. Defensively, Williamsburg held Mid-Prairie to 7-of-43 shooting (16.1%).
• A 21-point performance from Myla Frimml helped the Iowa Valley girls basketball team pick up its first win of the season Friday against Belle Plaine. The Tigers won 36-33 in overtime after the game was tied at 28 to end regulation. Iowa Valley also won the boys game, 77-38.
Conference Standings Update

In the South Iowa Cedar League, it’s all Lynnville-Sully. On the boys side, the Hawks are 12-0 overall and 10-0 in conference play. The girls are 13-0, 10-0. Montezuma sits in second for both boys and girls.
In the WaMaC West, the Clear Creek Amana girls are 11-0 overall and 7-0 in WaMaC West play. The Clippers have some cushion over second-place Williamsburg. On the boys side, it is also CCA, who is 6-3 in conference play and 8-5 overall.
