WILLIAMSBURG — It’s safe to say the Williamsburg boys’ wrestling team wont be ranked 24th in Class 2A anymore.
Coming off a season-opening dual with No. 1 Mount Vernon Thursday, which they won 36-27, the Raiders carried momentum into a home dual tournament Saturday, winning all five.
The Raiders dominated in their first four duals, but their grit was tested in the final dual on the day.
Davenport Assumption jumped off to a 19-6 lead when 150-pounder Sawyer Kirby stepped on the mat.
Kirby pinned Assumption’s Lane Pennington, and the energy from the home crowd and fellow Raiders’ wrestlers shifted.
Three more Raiders pinned their opponents, completely shifting the match and giving the Raiders a 30-19 with five matches remaining.
Nile Sinn (157), Brady Grier (165) and Evan Stohlmann (175) were responsible for the other three pins, all in the first period.
“When you’ve got 14 weight-classes, it takes all 14 of them,” Williamsburg coach Grant Eckenrod said.
“We had some guys that lost some matches they maybe should not have on paper, but they battled for each other. Going over and beating No. 1 Mount Vernon and coming here and winning five duals against good teams, I’m very proud of them.”
Assumption fought back to win the next two matches and heavyweight Trenton Davies ground out a 4-2 decision victory to seal the dual win for the Raiders.
“They battled and fought today, and that’s what we preach,” Eckenrod said. “They wrestle with a lot of heart.”
The Raiders, as a team, got bonus points in many of their victories, with a lot of pins.
Two Raiders went 5-0 on the day, Kirby and returning state place winner Sinn.
Sinn had four pins — one at a weight class above his usual 157 — and one victory by tech fall with a 20-4 win over Marshalltown’s Carson Wright.
Kirby won four by fall and one by forfeit.
Next up for the Raiders is a dual against another tough WaMaC test in Solon Thursday.
“The WaMaC is one of the best, if not the best conference in 2A,” Eckenrod said. “We got to keep getting better, and we can’t be satisfied.”
