WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg girls’ wrestling team had five state qualifiers last season and return two for this season — Phoenix Gryp and Valerie Altenhofen.
Gryp is a returning state place winner, finishing seventh last season
“We graduated a big senior class that helped pave the way for girls’ wrestling at Williamsburg,” Williamsburg head coach Drew Hinschberger said.
“Last season didn't end the way we wanted it to, but we are in a good spot to pick up from where we left off.”
With the culture now built in the program, Coach Hinschberger will turn to other returners to make an impact this season.
“Everyone we return from last season is going to make an impact,” Hinschberger said. “They all know the culture and expectations of our program, and they saw the growth they made from the beginning of last season to the end.”
The Raiders will be competing in Class 1A this season now that the sport is divided into two classes.
Hinschberger hopes to see growth on and off the mat this season. Practice begins Monday.
“Our goals for this upcoming season are simple,” Hinschberger said. “To have everyone improve and get better from last year. If we can do that individually, we will also improve as a team.
“We want to compete and be competitive in every competition we are in but my main goal for them is to grow individually on and off the mat.”
The Raiders open their season in tournaments at South Tama Nov. 21 and Independence Nov. 23.
