WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg girls’ swimming team made the podium in seven of 11 events in their final home meet of the season Monday night.
The events had one thing in common — they involved the relay quartet of Mia Becker, Selah Smith, Kya Dobesh and Emily McGovern.
“Our relays tonight did great,” Williamsburg head coach Mindy Wuebker said. “There’s just something exciting, something to dig a little deeper when you have a team that is counting on you.”
The quartet finished second behind Grinnell in both the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays.
The 400 relay time of 4:19.71 was a season best for the Raiders.
Three members of the quartet also made the podium in their individual events on the evening — McGovern and Smith in two events each.
“They both have been putting in a lot of work, while both working through injury and illness,” Wuebker said of Smith and McGovern.
Smith was second in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Smith trailed in second heading into the last leg of the medley and was able to pass in the final 25 yards.
McGovern finished second in the 100 freestyle with a new season best and finished third in the 50 freestyle.
The Raiders other podium finish came from Dobesh, who was third in the 200 freestyle.
Grinnell won the team title with a score of 442, winning 10 of the 11 events.
The Raiders came in second with 304.5 points.
“Senior night always brings out a lot of energy and excitement,” Wuebker said. “I feel like our technique is coming through and that helped us get up to those second place finishes and personal bests throughout the night.”
A few Raiders were just shy of the top three places, finishing fourth: the 200 medley relay team, Gwen Yearian in the 100 butterfly and Abby Carr in the 100 freestyle.
The Raiders are entering the final stretch of regular season meets before conference and state qualifying meets.
“We still have a few more weeks of hard work,” Wuebker said. “After conference we can tone in more of those minute things and technique that really make a difference.”
The Raiders are currently ranked in the 30s in a few events; 32 is the cutoff for State after the qualifying meet.
