Raiders open hoops season with win
Basketball, wrestling highlights from Williamsburg

FORT MADISON — The Raider boys’ basketball team opened the season 1-0 with a 61-57 win over Fort Madison Dec. 2.
After the long drive south to Fort Madison, the two teams decided to make the trip worth it and played not one, but two extra periods.
The Raiders gave up a six-point lead in the fourth quarter to tie the game at the end of regulation. Both teams managed just four points in OT 1 before the visitors pulled ahead and secured the W by four.
The Raiders go back on the road Friday, Dec. 8 to take on Independence. The first home game will be Tuesday, Dec. 12 against Center Pointe-Urbana.
Girls basketball
The Williamsburg girls basketball team hosted a pair of games last week and came away with a split record.
On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the Raiders faced Center Point-Urbana. Williamsburg shot 49% from the field, including 40% from behind the 3-point arc, to walk away with a 61-50 win.
The Raiders were up 11 after the first quarter and 18 at the half.
Kennedy Skaggs led Williamsburg with 14 points. Zoe Allen contributed eight rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Friday, Dec. 1, brought a 4-0 Solon team to town. The Spartans started hot and led by eight after one frame and never relinquished the lead, winning 71-43 over the Raiders.
The Williamsburg girls sit at 2-1 in the young season. Williamsburg was scheduled to travel to Marion Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Boys wrestling
The Raider boys’ wrestling team opened its season with a dual meet loss to Mount Vernon Nov. 30. The Mustangs notched six falls on the way to a 51-12 win.
Williamsburg’s lower weights were the standouts on this night. Nolan Kent, 113 pounder, put the Raiders on the board in the night’s third match with a fall in 3:24 over CJ Martin.
Lincoln Schropp, at 120, followed with a narrow 6-5 decision for the Raiders.
The three-match sweep for Williamsburg was completed with a 3-2, Kyler Provin win at 126. That wrapped up the Raider scoring.
On Saturday, the Raiders hosted the Williamsburg duals. The Raiders went 2-1 on the day, defeating Center Point-Urbana and Pella but coming up just short vs. Marshalltown.
Williamsburg recorded falls from Brett Santiago (165), Evan Stohlmann (175), Gavin Vesey (215), Trenton Davies (285), Kent, and Schropp on the way to a 63-16 win.
Bowen Stratton (106) added an 11-5 decision for the Raiders.
Against Pella, Williamsburg got bonus points by way of five falls and a major decision to top the Dutch 37-31.
Falls were credited to Stratton, Provin, Albert Bamrick (138), Sawyer Kirby (144) and Santiago. Schropp majored and Logan Schmidt (157) won by decision.
Marshalltown nudged Williamsburg by a final of 38-34 after winning eight of fourteen matches. Winning for the Raiders were Caleb Lacina (190) and Stratton by forfeit.
Schropp, Kirby and Nile Sinn (150) all won by pinfall. Provin scored a major decision.
The grapplers next travel to Solon for a triangular Thursday, Dec. 7.
Girls wrestling
The girls’ wrestling team competed in the tough Dan Gable Donnybrook at Xtreme Areana in Coralville last week.
The highlight of the tournament for the Raiders was the third-place finish of Phoenix Gryp at 145 pounds. Gryp received a first-round bye before two straight pins put her up against Anastasi Simon of Decorah.
Gryp fell 4-2 in sudden victory but bounced back with a major decision to claim the medal.
Anya Rivera, 105 pounder, went 2-3 for the tourney to claim third place in the consolation bracket.
Madison Kirby, at 115, won four of five matches, two by fall, to claim fifth place.
At 120, Zoe Thede had two falls and a major decision sandwiched between two losses to finish 17th. Also at 120, Hayden Wade won every other match to finish 3-2 in 11th place.
Keston Spratt took seventh at 125 with three wins by fall and two losses. Cecelia Gryp placed 14th at 125 going 2-3 on the day.
Ava Garcia won a couple at 130 and placed 23rd. Makenna Capper dropped her first two matches and then stormed back with three straight wins to capture first in the consolation bracket.
Shannon Finn finished 10th in the 135 pound bracket with a 3-2 record with three pins.
In the 140 pound bracket Emily Bayer took 21st on the back of two late round falls while Valerie Altenhofen fell to the consolation bracket and then rode some byes to a championship.
Lilly Ness rode two falls and a bye to an 18th place finish at 155.
