CORALVILLE — The Williamsburg boys’ wrestling team placed fourth at the IHSAA State Dual Tournament Saturday at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
For multiple seniors, it was the last chance to compete in a team-style format with their teammates.
“It’s been so much fun battling with the guys,” Raiders senior Nile Sinn said. “Top four in the State isn’t too bad at the end of the day. I’m super proud of the guys, and I’m going to miss the dual environment.”
One of the unique aspects of a dual is the momentum that can flow from one match to the next.
That was the case in the Raiders quarterfinal match to start the day against WaMaC competitor Independence.
The dual started at 190-pounds, and the Raiders were out with guns blazing.
Cael Moore set the tone with a first-period pin.
“I was just trying to go out there and get the six points,” said Moore. “We knew we were going to be able to get some pins and take some life out of them a bit.”
Indeed they did.
Carson Grier, at 215, followed Moore with a pin of his own.
The Raiders would won the next five matches, some in clutch endings in the third period.
Riker DeWitt usually wrestles at 106 but bumped up to 113 to wrestle Independence’s ranked Benjamin Anderson.
DeWitt was down 6-0 heading into the third-period but picked up his offense and got three takedowns for a 9-8 victory.
The next clutch win came at 126.
Lincoln Schropp, down 2-0, got a takedown at the last second for a 3-2 victory over Carver Wieland.
The decision gave the Raiders a 31-0 lead.
The rest of the dual was all Mustangs. They won six of the last seven to close the deficit to four in the 37-33 final.
The Raiders matched up with No. 1 Algona in the semifinals.
Starting at 215, the Raiders started the semifinals as they had started the tournament.
Carson Grier opened with a pin, and Charlie Foster (106), DeWitt (113) and Hayden Albaugh (120) added wins to put the Raiders up 19-6.
Then the Bulldogs flexed their muscles, showing why they were the top-ranked team. The Bulldogs won the next six matches, from 126-157, including tight matches at 144 and 150.
Brady Grier and Moore added victories at 165 and 190, but the Raiders fell short 32-27.
“We had opportunities and just couldn’t get it done,” Williamsburg coach Grant Eckenrod said on the semifinals loss. “It’s hard to swallow but the guys have nothing to be ashamed of.”
In the nightcap, the Raiders faced Clarion-Goldfield-Dows for third place.
The Cowboys got out hot and did not look back. They won eight matches, earning bonus points in seven of them, and won 42-31.
“Clarion ended up being a matchup nightmare for us. We knew it was going to be tough,” Eckenrod said.
The Raiders got falls from DeWitt at 106, Moore and Carson Grier. All three went 3-0.
“I’m very proud of these guys, and they’ve had a great season, but it’s not over yet,” Eckenrod said. “They’ve done some amazing things, some things I wasn’t expecting.”
The Raiders now set their sights on Districts Saturday, which the Raiders will host in front of a home crowd.
“We came up here, and these are the best teams in the State, which is good prep,” Sinn said. “It exposes stuff we need to work on, and that’s what we’re going to do this week in practice, and send as many guys through as we can in front of the home crowd.”
Sinn and Moore, both seniors, are two-time qualifiers, and both want to make podium this season.
